Centos upgrade from 9 to 10 possible? (original) (raw)

Hi, so I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade CentOS Stream 9 to 10 without the need of a reinstall?

Not out of the box. It could be possibly be done by ‘hand’ working through a lot of the issues of package dependency and conflicts. In general CentOS Stream upgrades are backup and reinstall.

I have to admit that compared to Fedora that does feel odd, oh well I guess.
Is that something that the board is considering?

I’ve asked the same question for 8 → 9 about one year ago which is probably still relevant. If you are not in a rush it might be worth waiting for Alma’s elevate tool:

Honestly while Alma is good for providing something like that, I personally want to stick with CentOS Stream as a distribution…

I didn’t suggest switching to Alma, its just that the elevate tool is created by Alma’s team but it should also support CentOS Stream upgrades (sooner or later, we’ll see). I’m pretty sure there won’t be an official upgrade tool by CentOS so if you want to upgrade that is something to look out for.
For the CS 8 to 9 upgrade I followed a guide which was mostly manual work and it also worked out very good in the end. The link and all the details are in the thread I linked above.
