A huge thank you to the Hempel Foundation’s education partners 🙏 This past week in New York, I had the privilege of representing the Hempel Foundation at several key events and meetings. This year was particularly special for us as we co-hosted three events with some of our strongest education partners 🙌 At the Hempel Foundation, we firmly believe that foundational literacy, numeracy, and socioemotional skills are the essential building blocks for all future learning 📚 Without these skills, children face significant barriers not only in education but also in their ability to contribute to society and lead empowered lives. Throughout the week, there was a palpable sense of urgency to ensure that advancing foundational learning for all children remains at the top of the political agenda. Our believe is that bringing the right stakeholders together can serve as a catalyst for meaningful change—moving from commitments to tangible action. Here are just a few highlights from a busy week; On September 20th, the Hempel Foundation co-hosted a side event with UNICEF and the Foundational Learning Coalition to launch the latest findings from the Foundational Learning Action Tracker. While some progress has been made, 75% of countries—including many in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia—have shown no significant improvement. Given the high levels of learning poverty in these regions, this is a critical area that demands urgent attention! In collaboration with the African Union, Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), Human Capital Africa, TaRL Africa, and VVOB, we supported a high-level event focusing on Scaling Success in Foundational Literacy and Numeracy in Africa. This gathering spotlighted impactful initiatives aimed at improving foundational learning and included ministerial representation from Sierra Leone, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, and Malawi as well as the African Union Commissioner of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation. A key takeaway was the need for innovative, evidence-based and targeted financing alongside more effective use of existing recourses. My final engagement was a panel discussion titled "Empowering Communities: Local Solutions for Global Education Goals", hosted by our partner Building Tomorrow Tomorrow, alongside the Inherent Foundation, Global Schools Forum, The Bridgespan Group, Educate Girls, and The Brookings Institution. It was a thought-provoking conversation on how implementers, funders, and thought partners can work together to advance quality education globally through community-led work. I left New York with renewed energy and optimism, and I’m deeply grateful for the commitment shown by our partners in advancing this critical agenda. - 🌍✨ A big thank you to everyone who joined us at the #UNGA side event this week; "Scaling Success: Advancing Foundational Literacy and Numeracy through Partnerships and Innovation in Africa". We are proud to have supported this inspiring gathering, which brought together passionate minds to tackle one of the most critical challenges of our time – ensuring every child has access to quality foundational learning. Co-hosted by Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) and the African Union, and supported by technical partners such as VVOB, Teaching at the Right Level Africa, UNICEF, and Human Capital Africa, the event highlighted innovative approaches and successful partnerships that are driving meaningful progress in foundational learning across Africa. At the Hempel Foundation, we believe that foundational literacy and numeracy are the building blocks for a brighter future. That’s why we are deeply committed to supporting initiatives that create lasting change in education, particularly in regions where it is needed the most. Together, through partnerships and innovation, we can empower the next generation with the skills they need to succeed. Thank you for being part of this important conversation! 🌱📚#UNGA #UNGA2024 #ScalingSuccess #FoundationalLiteracy #LearningCrisis #EducationForAll #AcceleratingChangeTogether #ACT Kakula Wandi Tom Vandenbosch, Naomi Goldschmidt, Anna Carmen Murru, Stefaan Vande Walle, Alia Karim, Anna Mølgaard Thaysen, Chinedu Anarado, Fumiaki Sagisaka, Jacqueline Jere-Folotiya, Naila Butt, Santos Akhilele, Titus Syengo, Victoria Egbetayo, Erica Gerretsen, Conrad Sackey, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Pia Rebello Britto, Obiageli “Oby” Ezekwesili

🌍 Tackling the learning crisis: A global Call for Action 📚 In a joint op-ed (in Danish) in Altinget.dk, Anders Holm, Executive Director at the Hempel Foundation, and Susanne Dahl, Executive Director at UNICEF Danmark, highlight the crucial role of foundational learning as building blocks for the future of children, families, societies, and entire continents. During the UN General Assembly, the Hempel Foundation and UNICEF launched a new report that spotlights how 89 countries are working to advance foundational learning. The report identifies five key areas where urgent action is needed to tackle the learning crisis: 1️⃣ Ensure all children are enrolled and stay in school. 2️⃣ Help children recover lost learning and teach them at their current learning levels. 3️⃣ Provide teachers with the support and tools they need. 4️⃣ Safeguard students’ and teachers’ health, nutrition, and psychosocial well-being. 5️⃣ Promote policies that prioritize foundational learning. While the report shows progress in parts of the world, 3 of 4 countries have made little to no significant progress since 2023. Especially on the African continent, only few countries are seeing improvements. With 9️⃣ out of 🔟 children in Sub-Saharan Africa unable to read and comprehend a simple text, there’s an urgent need to intensify efforts in these regions to secure foundational skills for more children and fight the learning crisis. Advancing foundational learning in the world’s least developed countries is a complex challenge requiring close collaboration between governments, donors, and key organizations. These partnerships are crucial in ensuring that foundational learning remains a priority on the global agenda, particularly in regions where progress has been slow.#FoundationalLearning #AcceleratingChangeTogether #ACT #EducationForAll #LearningCrisis #LetMeLearn #UNGA #UNGA2024 #EducationForAll #HempelFoundation #UNICEF
Hempel Fonden og Unicef: Læringskrisen efter corona kan blive en global generationskatastrofe altinget.dk - 🌍 Building Foundations for a Sustainable Future 🌱 Last Friday, Hempel Foundation hosted a pivotal event at #UNGA2024 together with UNICEF to launch the 2024 #CommitmentsToAction report and put foundational learning on the global agenda. Together with UNICEF and the Foundational Learning Coalition (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Global Partnership for Education, UNESCO, USAID, and The World Bank) and ministers, we explored the critical role of foundational skills in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 📚 In his opening remarks, Conrad Sackey, Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education in #SierraLeone, emphasized: "The criticality of evidence in our mission to end learning poverty cannot be emphasized enough. We need to create healthy environments for our children—classroom, community, and home—where they feel safe, protected, and encouraged to learn." The event featured presentations on the Foundational Learning Action Tracker (FLAT) by Pia Rebello Britto from UNICEF and a powerful panel discussion with Conrad Sackey (Sierra Leone), Mariatou KONE, Minister of National Education amd Literacy (Côte d'Ivoire), and DR. LANGSON CHIBUYE, Assistant Director Primary Education (Zambia), moderated by Benjamin Piper, Director of Global Education Programme at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. At Hempel Foundation, we are proud to partner with UNICEF through the Foundational Learning Action Tracker (FLAT) to provide real-time data that helps governments address the global learning crisis. As our Executive Director, Anders Holm, shared in his speech: "Without reliable data and evidence, it is challenging not only to assess progress but to direct resources and policy action toward proven basic interventions. That’s why the FLAT report is essential in identifying gaps and helping governments take action." Together, let’s keep accelerating change and driving progress to ensure every child has the opportunity to build a strong foundation for the future. 🌟 See the full report: https://lnkd.in/d7XVMDPW #FoundationalLearning #AcceleratingChangeTogether #ACT #EducationForAll #LearningCrisis #LetMeLearn #UNGA #UNGA2024 #EducationForAll #HempelFoundation #UNICEF UNICEF Danmark

🚀🌍 We’re excited to announce the launch of the Foundational Learning Action Tracker (FLAT) Report, in partnership with UNICEF. This new report titled "From Commitments to Action" gives critical insights into the progress made by countries around the world in tackling the global learning crisis and ensuring every child gains foundational skills in reading, writing, and math. A few takeaways from the report: 🏫 Among 89 low- and middle-income countries, 2️⃣ out of 3️⃣ are taking nationwide action to reach every child and keep them in school through collecting information on student attendance and dropout - an increase from 2023 where just over half of countries reported the same. 📄 Over 7️⃣5️⃣% of countries reported that learning standards for foundational literacy and numeracy in the early grades are clearly outlined in the national policy. 👩🏾🏫 The number of countries giving teachers nationwide tools to assess foundational learning levels has doubled since 2023. While there have been important strides, the data shows there is still much work to be done. The FLAT report is more than just a document—it's a tool for action and accountability. By tracking progress and highlighting where efforts need to be strengthened, this report empowers governments, educators, and organizations to take meaningful steps towards real, measurable change. Together, we can transform the learning crisis into an opportunity for millions of children. The path is clear: we need commitment and sustained action to ensure every child has access to quality education. Building brighter futures starts with foundational learning ✨📚🌱 Despite the ongoing efforts worldwide, the global learning crisis persists. Millions of children are attending school but are not acquiring even the most basic skills. 2/3 of children globally cannot read and understand a simple text by age 🔟. The good news? We know the actions needed to change this, and around the globe governments, organisations and educators are taking important steps to improve foundational learning for all children. Together with our partners, we're committed to ensuring every child gains foundational skills in reading, writing, and math to: ✅ Ensure children are enrolled in school. ✅ Support them in catching up on lost learning. ✅ Provide teachers with the right tools. ✅ Protect the well-being of students and teachers. ✅ Promote policies that support these efforts. While these steps aren't simple or quick fixes, they are the foundation of lasting change. Data plays a crucial role in this journey, helping us track progress, hold governments accountable, and guide effective actions to improve foundational learning. With reliable data, we can ensure every effort is focused on creating real impact for children worldwide. Last year, in partnership with UNICEF, we launched the Foundational Learning Action Tracker (FLAT) to monitor global progress on this vital agenda. We’re excited to soon release the second edition of the Foundational Learning Action Tracker (FLAT) report. This year’s data shows promising progress, but there’s still a long way to go. Let’s join forces to ensure foundational learning for all.Anders Holm Building Tomorrow #FoundationalLearning #AcceleratingChangeTogether #ACT #EducationForAll #LearningCrisis #LetMeLearn #UNGA #UNGA2024 #EducationForAll #HempelFoundation #UNICEF -

🌿 How nature-based investments can pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future. Yesterday, we hosted an investor’s roundtable meeting at the Hempel Foundation headquarters in Copenhagen, focusing on the growing field of nature-based investments. This gathering highlighted how impactful investments that benefit nature, while offering strong financial returns, are becoming essential strategies to tackle global environmental challenges. The event brought together industry leaders, investors, and practitioners from around the world to explore real-world examples and lessons learned. The event had insightful contributions from BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group, Conservation International, New Forests, and Nattergal Ltd (Archie Struthers and Ivan de Klee), with international case studies from Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the UK. At the Hempel Foundation, we believe in the power of these investments to drive meaningful change. David Emmett, Biodiversity Partnerships Senior Manager at Hempel Foundation said: "The urgency and scale of the biodiversity crisis requires more financing than philanthropy alone can provide. Impact investing is a fast-growing asset class that can help to bridge this financing gap - if we can only find ways to sustain and restore nature while making a financial profit, it would be a game-changer for addressing this crisis at the scale and pace needed." Thank you to all who attended, and we look forward to fostering future collaborations for a more sustainable world! #NatureBasedInvestments #Sustainability #ImpactInvesting #AcceleratingChangeTogether #ACT
