According to Carmen Pedrosa, Imelda Marcos never lived in the mansion; it was "meant only to be viewed." The house cum museum reflects the official representation of her past and her role as mother of the country. The design of the house and the many objects collected the world over, not only shows the great wealth and power that she gained, but also her claim of foreign and aristocratic origins. The objects also convey a representation of the first lady that she wanted to make her people and the world believe: That she was born and destined to lead. It will be observed that she wanted to show an image of herself just like the ancient Filipino Babaylan-narrator of the people's story, healer of physical and social ills, spiritual leader of the people-the bearer of "ginhawa." In the end, whatever representation a personality or an institution desires to ingrain in the national memory through text or concretely, it is the experience and socialization of the individual which will determine his or her image of that historical figure. The individual has the prerogative not to believe such a fabricated image, especially if it does not square with one's experience of history.

Similar to the present-day State of the Nation Address, the celebrations reflected the mood and sentiments of the government and served as the articulation of how the ruling elite democracy imagined the nation that would be established under the guidance of the United States of America. The plans for national defense, (2) the loyalty of America, (3) the achievements of the Commonwealth government, (4) optimism for the future, (5) Pres. She claimed that during her husband's administration, there were a number of elections held for 3 million elected positions throughout the archipelago 2 (Chua, 2010), so it was not really a time of dictatorship. How can there be a dictatorship if there were elections and consultative assemblies? This chapter is about key events that happened in relation to elections held under the regime of Ferdinand Marcos as President of the Philippines. These stories will show us how a democratic process such as the elections can be appropriated by a dictatorship to show that it has legitimacy. Also, we would look at what changes happened after People Power and the ouster of Marcos, and how these changes affect today's elections. We would see that People Power improved the electoral situation as compared to elections held under Marcos. It democratized participation, but not as much as we desire it to be, "Lutong Macoy," under new and improved ways, seems to still exist. But hope is seen in the continued participation and commitment of the Filipino people to clean, honest and orderly elections. B. We may not know exactly when the image of the Black Nazarene arrived in the 1600s, or when the devotion started to spread and become popular, but what we can see throughout history how Jesus as the Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno (NPJN) became central to Filipinos' understanding of Jesus Christ as Emmanuel (Ang Diyos na nakipagkapwa-tao) and how it strengthened them throughout the various struggles in our history. We also continue to express that spirit of pakikipagkapwa-tao through one of the most overwhelming manifestations of Filipino devotion to Christ-the procession and eventually the Traslacion of the NPJN every 9 January, wherein the devotees and the whole society, in general, is united to maintain order, and Bayanihan as the devotees worship. The whole bayan working together in pagsalya (pushing and putting into order) of their faith and their culture as a way of sharing in the via crucis of the Lord, and in thanking Him for the many hopeful resurrections.
