Hello again all!

Today's post is a double feature of sorts. We're looking at Contact Crisis Line of Fayetteville and their annual event, the 10k Race for Hope.

Contact is a non-profit, volunteer operated crisis-line. Their dedicated phone workers handle calls of every kind, including those with painful family/interpersonal situations, the suicidally depressed, and people in desperate need of resource info. Their lines never go unanswered.

So, if you're local and interested in volunteering, please visit the website for further info.
*please note there is a training course and fee ($25.00) involved.*

If you're not local and are interested in donating, visit the website too. : )

If you happen to know any marathon runners, you might pass the following info along:

Who: Contact of Fayetteville

What: 10k Race for Hope marathon and year round volunteer opportunities.

When: The 10k will be held on March 28th, 2009 in Fayetteville, NC.

Further info: Contact homepage

Well, it's certainly time for an update. Today we're shining the old spotlight on The Nature Conservancy, NC chapter.

If preserving and protecting the environment is your passion, look no further. The Nature Conservancy offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for North Carolinians. The Rundown: Volunteers may do field work such as conservation projects (planting trees, etc.), doing plant/animal inventories, and general clean up. Fire program projects include prescribed burning (classroom and hands on training, fitness test required), pre/post burn work, and research. For those who want to give their time in a different way, general office work is also apparently available.

Where: This organization has satellite offices throughout the state, including locations in Asheville, Wilmington, Southern Pines, Roanoke River, and Durham (see the website for more info). According to the website:*Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age; those who are 17 and under must have parental permission, while potential volunteers under 16 must be escorted by a parent.

For anyone who doesn't know, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. In honor of that, this post will spotlight several organizations.

Organization: Interact of Wake County (a United Way agency). Interact serves the women of Wake County through domestic and sexual violence prevention/victim support, awareness raising, and education.

Opportunities: You can volunteer both time and money. Volunteers apparently can assist in a variety of ways including victim advocacy, fund-raising, crisis counseling (training required), administration, etc. For more information, visit the Interact homepage.

The second organization is Rape Crisis of Cumberland County.

Opportunities: Volunteer as a rape crisis counselor (training required) or donate with info from either Volunteer Match or this ywca page.

Organization: If you're interested in wilderness preservation and love spending time outdoors, you might want to check out a group called SALT (the Sandhills Area Land Trust).

Opportunities: A volunteer program called Hands to Lands. Participants learn about land stewardship through a variety of activities; they count local flora/fauna, plant native species of plants & trees, clear bike paths and more.

For more info, visit the SALT homepage Volunteer information is listed on the left side of the page under "Make a Commitment."
