Abstract
This paper discusses the nature of information retrieval, its particular problems, and information retrieval systems in general. Traditional efforts in search analysis and question negotiation are presented, along with a sample of the numerous techniques of automated search manipulation. The newer methods involving the cognitive approach are discussed, and conclusions are drawn regarding the status of the situation and the possible future.
