Lymphocyte Mediated Cytolysis as a Secretory Phenomenon (original) (raw)

Abstract

In this paper we would like to develop the idea that lymphocyte-mediated killing of foreign cells is a result of a secretory process by the effector lymphocyte which is triggered by the interaction of cell surface receptors with specific ligand, and that the result of this secretory event is the transfer of a pore-forming substance into the membrane of the target cell. We will discuss the evidence which we have obtained in studying human ADCC and NK systems, but we also believe that this serves as a plausible general model for events in cytolysis mediated by CTL. At present we realize that there remains much work to be done to establish this hypothesis even for the ADCC and NK mechanisms, but we also believe that the time has come to bring together the growing body of evidence which supports this concept.
