Sounds and Sighs: “Voice Porn” for Women (original) (raw)
Abstract
Some male vocal actors have released radio-drama style BL performances on CD; these are often accompanied by illustrated, albeit non-sexually explicit, games. Such CDs represent just one example of a developing trend, in which the auditory experience of anime is prioritized over the visual; this phenomenon raises interesting questions regarding the mutual interrelationship between actors, characters, and fans. Hidden behind the characters’ voices are actual male bodies, and there is an undeniable potential that discrepancies may arise between the intended and actual reception of those voices. In this chapter, I explore these auditory interactions by identifying the varied conditions under which the voices of BL reach their fans and inquire how fans receive those voices. I also analyze BLCDs as “voice porn” for girls and young women utilizing Linda Williams’s work on body and pornography.
