Interaction ofFLC and late-flowering mutations inArabidopsis thaliana (original) (raw)
Abstract
The phenotype caused by mutations that affect the timing of flowering in_Arabidopsis thaliana_ has been most extensively analyzed in the Landsberg_erecta_ (L_er_) genetic background. In L_er_, the late-flowering phenotype of_FRIGIDA_ and mutations in_LUMINIDEPENDENS_ is suppressed by the L_er_ allele of_FLC_. In this study, the interactions of nine mutations conferring late flowering with the_FLC_ allele of the Columbia ecotype (FLC_-Col), which does not suppress late flowering, were examined. The effect on flowering time of combining six of the mutations with_FLC_-Col was additive; plants containing_FLC_-Col with_fd, gi, fwa, fha, ft, and_fe_ flowered slightly later than plants containing these mutations with the_Ler_ allele of_FLC_. In contrast, a synergistic effect was observed between_FLC_-Col and three mutations;fca, fpa, and_fve_ plants became extremely late flowering when combined with_FLC_-Col. Maximum delay in flowering for the majority of the mutant strains required_FLC_-Col in a homozygous state, although for_fpa_ and_fe_ a single copy of_FLC_-Col allowed maximum lateness. In addition, the_fd_ and_fe_ mutations became more dominant in the presence of_FLC_-Col.
