Histamine-liberating Effect of Magnesium Deficiency in the Rat (original) (raw)

Abstract

DIETARY magnesium deficiency in the rat gives rise, after a few days, to a characteristic peripheral vasodilation with erythæma and œdema1. This change lasts for about a week, regresses and then re-appears later on. The signs of magnesium deficiency have been tentatively ascribed to a secondary vitamin B deficiency2 and have also been compared to human neurodermatitis3. However, it was shown recently that magnesium deficiency induces a decrease in the number of subcutaneous mast cells4, as well as an impairment in mast cell regeneration5. These observations are indicative of a change in histamine distribution that could be ascertained by measuring plasma and urinary histamine.
