Inhibition of Synthesis of RNA in E. coli by the Narcotic Drug Lævorphanol (original) (raw)

Abstract

WE have found that morphine and certain of its analogues inhibit the growth of E. coli. With one of these, læevorphanol, complete inhibition is observed at a concentration of 10−3 M and partial inhibition at 10−4 M. Inhibition of growth is demonstrable in minimal as well as in rich culture media and is completely reversible on removal of the drug.
