Abstract
IT has been argued that most of the evolutionary changes observed in homologous proteins are the result of chance fixation of selectively neutral mutations1,2. This hypothesis would be clarified by a more detailed analysis of observed patterns of amino-acid substitutions in related proteins than has been attempted previously3.
