Neuronal localisation of immunoreactive enkephalin and β-endorphin in the earthworm (original) (raw)

Abstract

SINCE the report by Simantov _et al._1 invertebrates have been thought to lack endogenous opiates and opiate receptors. As we have previously observed peptidergic neurones containing immunoreactive pancreatic polypeptide or vasoactive intestinal peptide in the earthworm2, we decided to search for, and report here our finding of, nerves storing immunoreactive enkephalin or _β_-endorphin in this species.
