The June AACR/APMIS conferenceFootnote 1on ‘proteases and protease inhibitors in cancer’ provided an opportunity to take a good look at the importance of these proteins in cancer biology, particularly for functions other than cellular invasion1. The conference came at an appropriate time, with booming interest in angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels) as a therapeutic target and with first-generation synthetic matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors (MMPIs), such as British Biotech's marimastat, hitting the clinic. The emerging picture is that some questions — such as what individual proteases and inhibitors do during tumorigenesis, and whether this information is useful in prognosis or therapy — may soon be answered.
