Abstract
The advantages of using monoclonal antibodies account for current interest in antibodies specific for interferem1–3. The successful isolation of a hybridoma line secreting mouse monoclonal antibodies to human leukocyte interf eron (IFN-α) has already been reported4. We have now established a stable hybrid myeloma line (FO) which secretes antibody against human fibroblast interferon (IFN-β). We have demonstrated that, even after removal of much of the sugar moiety of IFN-β, the monoclonal anti-IFN-β antibodies neutralize the antiviral activity of human IFN-β but not that of human IFN-α. We suggest the possible use of these monoclonal antibodies for the identification and purification of IFN-β expressed by DNA cloned in bacteria.
