Abstract

Abstract: Excess body fat is widely considered one of the factors that is linked to acute pancreatitis (AP), but its specific role is far from being fully understood. This Editorial offers an insight into the recent research in this field with particular emphasis on findings of the latest prospective population-based studies. It discusses whether body fat distribution influences the risk of developing first-time AP, whether excess body fat affects clinically meaningful outcomes in patients with developed AP, and whether a case can be made for biological interaction between several metabolic components in this disease.
