Correlation between a Coat Protein Amino-terminal Sequence and a Ribosome-binding DNA Sequence from φX 174 (original) (raw)

Abstract

CURRENT work on nucleotide sequences from the single-stranded DNA of φX 174 has prompted a study of amino-acid sequences of the proteins of this phage to see if any DNA sequences can be identified as part of a gene specifying a protein amino-acid sequence. Isolation of a ribosome-binding DNA fragment by Robertson et al.1 initiated a study of the N-terminal amino-acid sequences of φX 174 coat proteins. The phage has at least four proteins in the coat: the capsid protein of molecular weight about 50,000, and three spike components of molecular weights about 36,000, 20,000 and below 10,0002.
