Rodríguez, who trained as a plant geneticist at the University of Nebraska, is right about the intuitive hostility of many scientists and other intellectuals towards both the party and the government of President Carlos Menem. But as that government comes to an end — Menem will probably stand down, and his party is widely tipped to lose this autumn's presidential elections — many scientists now accept that its attempts to reform Argentina's science and technology policy have been worthwhile, if belated.
