Mutants of Salmonella with Unusually Low Toxicity for Mice (original) (raw)

Abstract

IT has been previously reported from our laboratory1–3 that galactose-sensitive mutants of Salmonella enteritidis and Salmonella typhimurium, which are defective in uridine diphospho-galactose-4-epimerase (epimerase), contain only glucose in their cell wall, entirely lacking galactose, rhamnose, mannose and tyvelose (or abequose), which are regarded as the usual constituents of the cell wall sugars of wild-type cells. These cell wall polysaccharides are known to constitute a part of the endotoxins of bacteria4,5, and it seemed of interest to examine what effect the alteration in the composition of polysaccharides might have on toxicity of bacteria.
