To the Editor:

Immunology has been and remains one of the most fascinating scientific disciplines at the interface between biology and medicine. It is no wonder that immunology has been high on the list of many prestigious award-winning committees—for example, 12 Nobel Prizes have been awarded in the discipline of immunology, and if the scope is broadened to include infection, inflammation and malignancy, many more can be counted. From the first Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine ever, awarded to Emil von Behring, to the most recent, awarded to Ralph M. Steinman, Bruce Beutler and Jules A. Hoffmann, immunology has always been considered 'Nobel worthy', and undoubtedly future prizes will be awarded to immunologists. So is there a need for a new prize specifically dedicated to immunology? We have little doubt that immunologists worldwide will welcome the decision of the foundation Else Kröner-Fresenius-Stiftung to create the Else Kröner-Fresenius Immunology Award. The sheer size of the sum to be awarded—4 million euros—will make the prize very prestigious among immunology-related awards.
