Abstract

Further studies on the composition of solar cosmic rays have been made particularly with regard to he nuclei of charge 10 or more. The results support the earlier conclusion that the composition of the ultiply charged nuclei in solar cosmic rays seems to reflect that of the sun as determined by spectroscopic eans for those nuclei where comparisons can be made. The abundances of helium and neon hich cannot be determined well in the photo sphere by spectroscopic means are found to be 107 l 14 nd 0.13 i 0.02 relative to oxygen, respectively, for the energetic solar particles. The helium nuclei igidity spectrum during one period in the November 12, 1960, solar cosmic ray event has been extended o lower rigidities than measured previously, thereby permitting a comparison to the proton rigidity pectrum over a wider interval. The result of this analysis together with previous work demonstrates hat it is unlikely that any of the simple spectral forms proposed in the literature yield a consistent answer r both protons and helium nuclei for all events.
