ABSTRACT
The premaximum spectrum of a Large Magellanic Cloud nova is described. The emission-line spectrum appears to correspond to a phase about 5 magnitudes below maximum. The nova showed an unusually rapid decline of 0.5 mag per day at the time of discovery after maximum.
