Aims and Scope

Published by the American Mathematical Society since 1900, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society is devoted to research articles in all areas of pure and applied mathematics. To be published in the Transactions, a paper must be correct, new, and significant. Further, it must be well written and of interest to a substantial number of mathematicians. Piecemeal results, such as an inconclusive step toward an unproved major theorem or a minor variation on a known result, are in general not acceptable for publication. Papers of less than 15 printed pages that meet the above criteria should be submitted to the Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society. Published pages are the same size as those generated in the style files provided for AMS-LaTeX.

Peer Review

All articles appearing in this journal are peer reviewed by external reviewers. Editors may reject papers without external review that are not suitable for publication in the journal due to reasons such as subject matter or clear weaknesses in scientific content or presentation style. Transactions of the AMS has adopted a double-anonymous peer-review model in which both authors and referees of a given article remain anonymous to each other. The AMS Journals Digitization Project has established a complete digital archive of the back issues of the Transactions of the American Mathematical Society from 1900 to 1995. Transactions of the American Mathematical Society is published monthly with articles electronically published individually to the AMS website before appearing in an issue. Transactions is also accessible electronically from the Transactions landing page.

Offprint information:

Offprints are provided free of charge in electronic form to all authors. A downloadable and printable PDF version of each article is available from the AMS website following print publication. Notification email containing access information is sent to all authors as soon as an issue is published in print. This electronic delivery system provides authors with permanent electronic access to their published material.

Submission

All articles submitted to this journal are peer-reviewed. Transactions of the AMS has adopted a double-anonymous peer-review model in which both authors and referees of a given article remain anonymous to each other. The AMS uses Centralized Manuscript Processing for initial submissions to AMS journals. Papers submitted to Transactions of the AMS (to be published in either Transactions of the AMS or Transactions of the AMS, Series B) should exceed 15 printed pages in length. The preferred method of submission is to upload a PDF file using the Initial Manuscript Submission form.

If a paper copy is being forwarded to the AMS, the following information is required with the submission (note that all contact information, particularly email addresses, must be supplied to avoid delay):

No paper that has been previously published, or is being considered for publication elsewhere, should be submitted to the American Mathematical Society, nor may a paper that is under consideration by the American Mathematical Society be submitted elsewhere.

Included with the footnotes to the paper should be the 2020 Mathematics Subject Classification representing the primary and secondary subjects of the article.

The AMS Author Resource Center provides TeX Resources, the AMS Style Guide, the Mathematics Subject Classification, and further useful tools for preparing your manuscript. Journal abbreviations used in bibliographies are available for download.

After Acceptance

Once a paper has been accepted for publication, authors should follow the online Submission Instructions.

All authors must submit the Consent to Publish. All authors must agree regarding the Copyright Agreement. If the article is to be published in one of the AMS Open Access journals, authors must agree which Creative Commons License will be selected. Authors are encouraged to use AMS-prepared style files in preparing their papers.

Useful Tools

An abstract is required; it should be at least one complete sentence and at most 300 words. The AMS offers free worldwide access to the electronic abstracts. No abstracts appear in the printed journal starting in 1998.
