Abstract

This letter presents a wideband millimeter-wave (mmW) endfire circularly polarized (CP) antenna intensified by a metasurface to improve performance. The antenna element integrates a pair of horizontal electric dipoles with two vertically oriented substrates, simultaneously exciting two orthogonal electric-field components. Additionally, two diamond-shaped metasurface arrays are embedded into the substrates to optimize the amplitude and phase balance between the horizontal and vertical components. This configuration not only broadens the axial ratio (AR) bandwidth but also reduces the thickness of the vertical substrates. To further increase the gain, a linear 1×8 endfire CP antenna array has been designed and fabricated. The entire structure is fabricated using printed circuit board (PCB) technology. Measured results demonstrate a -10 dB impendence bandwidth of 35.52%, a 3 dB AR bandwidth of 34.69%, and a peak gain of 16.15 dBi. Owing to its compact profile and excellent performance, the proposed endfire CP antenna array is a promising candidate for wideband mmW wireless communication systems.
