A. Axiochos Alkibiadou
The most likely year for the birth of the famous Alkibiades is 451 /0 ', some four years before the death of his father Kleinias at the battle of Koronea in 447/6 2. Kleinias. who must have married Alkibiades' mother, the Alkmeonid Deinomache, daughter of Megakles, in the late 450s 3, was himself born, in all probability, c. 480 4.
Kleinias' father was another Alkibiades distinguished by Plato from his younger and more celebrated homonym by the appellation 6 παλαιός 5. Early in the 460s he moved a decree providing benefits for the children of Aristeides 6 and was active in bringing about the permanent exile of the ostracised Themistokles '. Asa result of the wave of anti-Spartan feeling at Athens that followed the Ithome affair he found himself compelled to renounce his family's Spartan proxenia in 462/1 8. Despite this gesture he too was ostracised, in all probability as a result of the ostrakophoria of 461 /0 held in Spring 460 9.
