Description

The Roman province of Noricum (mostly today's Austria) was part of the Roman Empire from 15 BC to AD 488. Archaeologists continuously study specific areas of this province, mainly particular sites at the so-called Danube limes. Eventually, this practice resulted in enhanced knowledge of these specific sites, while, on the contrary, our archaeological knowledge about the rural settlement in the Roman province's hinterland remained understudied. This inadequate knowledge of rural settlement concerns mainly the section located in today's Lower Austria. Therefore, the dissertation project "Roman Rural Landscapes in Noricum: Archaeological Investigations on Roman Settlement in the Hinterland of Northern Noricum" by Dominik Hagmann deals with the archaeological settlement activities of the ripa Norica's hinterland and studies ancient settlement in a precisely defined area of investigation in the north of the former Roman province of Noricum.
