Oooh I'm so excited! I'm a sophomore in G/T English II at my school, and we are doing a utopia/dystopia unit in class! I'm lucky I've already read half the books on the list (Anthem, 1984, Brave New World) and I just finished rereading The Giver. I was assigned to make a presentation for Brave New World and I got my very own copy of Huxley's masterpiece. :) Happy happy, joy joy. I have this project done already. The only thing I haven't finished is my presentation of how it relates to Skinner's theory, but that should be easy enough. Just thought I would post. <3

Glad to have found this community. My name is Callie. I'm in a post-apoc rock band called Blue Sky Theory, and our last album; Good Place, No Place; tells the story of a dystopia-slash-utopia that sends the world spiralling into global catastrophe. The last half of the album follows a couple of survivors to their bizarre fate.
In fact, we have a show on Monday, October 11th, at the Red Devil Lounge in San Francisco. If you live in the Bay Area, come check us out. We'd love to discuss dystopias/post-apoc romanticism. You can go to the Blue Sky Theory site for more details if you're interested.

i assume you have read 1984... i know that it was supposed to a chritisism of totalitarian regimes, however i felt like goldsteins book that was included in 1984 sounded like something written by marx (dielectical materialism i think it is called)... am i just imagining this or does what i said make sense...

Hi, my name is Chris and I am new to the community.
My reccomendations for excellent dystopian reading are:
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. Synopsis; the USA has become an extreme right-wing theocracy where women are designated very specific roles such as house-wife and handmaid: the role of the handmaid is to conceive on behalf of the house-wife because the wife would be corrupted if they were to have sex with their husband or something like that. All interesting stuff.
The Death of Grass by John Christopher. Synopsis; all forms of grass are being wiped out by a new disease, including all types of crop. The implications of this: famine on a global scale, and a descent into anarchy in pursuit of that which will aid survival by two men and their families. The book charts their journey across England to a safe haven where food is available.
And those are probably two of my favourite books of the dystopian variety! Read 'em.

I just re-read Ape and Essence...
I conclude to adore it, though not as wholly as Science, Liberty and Peace.
The simplicity of Harrison Bergeron is entirely attractive. I've read this work countless times, yet each time I see something new, perhaps a different perspective. I wonder if it will ever cease.
Is anyone fond of H.G. Wells?

hi all, my name is Rian Well, I joined because this community seemed interesting, I've always been interested in dystopian societies and such. In fact, I'm somewhat of a student filmmaker and just today we wrapped up post-production on a dystopian short film me and a group of my peers shot last week for a film camp. Uh, I guess that's it, good times.

Hiya! I joined this community because the premise of it is interesting, and I love dystopia literature, and movies.
I haven't seen the movie of 1984, but the book was chilling enough for me, and brave new world was great too, as well as Anthem. I haven't read one that I didn't enjoy, or at least got me thinking along lines I hadn't before. It appears this is a fairly new community, and I look forward to seeing it grow.
I found this because I love the movie Minority Report, btw.
