This interdisciplinary work opens new vistas on the complex interaction between toponyms, anthroponyms, and names in the religious, literary as well as commercial sphere in relation to ethnicity, language, culture and politics. It offers an appetizing smorgasbord of informative surveys, intriguing data and stimulating, theoretical contributions to the domain of the newly burgeoning field of socio-onomastics. The reviewer also points to some minor shortcomings as well as to further questions and challenges put forward by the volume under review, especially those related to multiculturalism and multilingualism in both theoretical and areal aspects.

The concept of 'framing patterns' /s adopted in order to demomtrate the dynamics and sociocultural relativity of Ms framing System. This paper is viewed äs a means offurthering the multidisciplinary effort aimed at explaining communication in general, and brings together several approaches, but may be of special relevance to those interested in the competence required to communicate appropriately in a second/foreign language setting. My purpose here is twofold. First, I wish to demonstrate the theoretical validity of viewing the interpersonal communication process äs consisting of two simultaneous but separate Systems — one 'symbolizing' and the other Organizing'. Second, I hope to demonstrate how problems arise in crosscultural communication due to the sociocultural relativity of these Systems. Thus, the paper may be of special relevance to those researching into the way in which second language is used, although it also has broad implications for other fields. The perspective adopted combines the insights and flndings of various current frameworks such äs discourse analysis, ethnography of speaking, ethnomethodology and semiotics, but no speciflc reference is made to these schools äs such, since this work is intended primarily äs a contribution to the general understanding and explanation of human communication from a very much needed multidisciplinary viewpoint. The analysis is, however, obviously oriented towards a semiotic and anthropological approach, but tries to avoid including any specialist terminology from these areas. 0165-4888/82/0002-0359 $2.00 Text 2 (4) (1982), pp. 359-374 © Mouton Publishers, Amsterdam

The paper hopes to serve the multidisciplinary effort to explain communication in general, providing an analytical overview and tentative first typology of discourse processes. It also highlights the ‘rhetoric’/discourse competence required to communicate appropriately in L2 contexts.

It proposes the notion of English-styled glocalization to account for a process of linguistic innovation that operates under distinctive commercial and linguistic constraints. It examines the key structural characteristics of English-styled names given to Japanese pen products in order to highlight the local adaptation of English in the world of product appellation. Keywords: Japanese commercial naming practices; English-derived product names for local and global merchandising; the glocalization of the onomastic landscape.

Integrating research from Great Britain, Bulgaria, Iraq, Japan, Romania, Spain and Ukraine, this collection of fifteen chapters offers innovative and inspiring insights from a comparative stance into the complex dynamics and parameters which govern the construction of "identity" in cultural and literary space.

Leo Loveday’s study applies the framework of illocutionary speech acts in " The Making of a Sarca... more Leo Loveday’s study applies the framework of illocutionary speech acts in " The Making of a Sarcastic Villain: The Pragmatics of Captain Hook’s Impoliteness" but explores how these can be exploited for stylistic goals and may function as a device for literary characterisation. The chapter demonstrates how an author influences a reader’s ascription of a villainous identity by associating it with the pragmatic untruthfulness that underlies a character’s sarcastic utterances. Captain Hook is too polished a villain to lower himself to the crudeness of foul insults and vulgar curses but revels instead in abusing his targets by subverting and contravening the conventional norms of conversation and society. This study shows how the attribution of malice and malignity can be triggered when a character’s sarcastic performance is perceived to breach social and moral limits. In this case, Hook’s conversational implicatures intimate sadistic pleasure in humiliation, torture and murder. Evil doers as archetypal figures have fired the human imagination ever since storytelling began. The wickedness of their personality can be referenced through various semiotic devices but sarcasm emerges as a firm favourite for the depiction of British villainy.
