Addressed through the use of carefully selected materials, systems and design strategies, these considerations are now widely implemented to augment the structures we inhabit, from our homes and workplaces to shops and healthcare centres. Yet, to be able to reverse the process of decline and destruction of our natural, social, and cultural environment, we need in addition to 'globalize' our architectural thinking, that is, to genuinely embrace knowledge and methods from other domains of knowledge that are alien to it today-But also, to change the global institutional framework that gives birth and safeguards the environmental quality of our world as envisioned by Mark Mazower.8 The future of regions should not be left to chance. Far from fading away, regions can be critically reborn by plan and design, resisting blind globalization while sustaining their complementarity, equity, and diversity, retaining their historical role as the best incubators of ecological, socioeconomic , and cultural creativity. Rather than concentrated in a central location, they are distributed around the globe. They are all experimenting instead of slavishly importing fashionable or mainstream formulas. Large or small, some located in dense urban settings, some in the open country, all of them try to engage with their region rather than standing up as autonomous lone schemes. They involve people (local technicians and self-help teams), materials, knowledge, and experience from the region, but also invite outside participation if it is helpful without causing a negative impact, physical, social, or cultural. The surface, color, and texture of their skin is physically and psychologically congenial rather than photogenically impressive. They provide concrete conditions conducive to potential contact and dialogue rather than icons of nativist community. It addresses issues of identity, diversity, community, inequality, geopolitics, and sustainability. From the authors who coined the concept of Critical Regionalism, this new edition enhances the understanding of the complex evolution of regionalism and its rival, unchecked globalization. Covering a rich selection of the most outstanding examples of design from all over the world, Liane Lefaivre and Alexander Tzonis, who introduced the concept of Critical Regionalism to architecture, present an enlightening, concise historical analysis of the endurance of regionalism and the ceaseless drive for globalization. New case studies include current cutting-edge projects in Japan, Africa, China, and the United States. Architecture of Regionalism in the Age of Globalization offers undergraduate and graduate students of architecture, geography, history, environmental studies, and other related fields an accessible, vivid, and scholarly perspective of this major conflict as it relates to the design and to the future of the human-made environment.
