Draw Me A Story

This is an experimental page for an ongoing communal narrative (or anti-narrative) which can include any narrative (or non-narrative) form such as prose, poetry, lists, scripts, tables, images and surveys, etc. It is intended for anyone willing and interested in contributing to an ongoing piece of art (with periodic digressions). There are no restrictions but that contributions be a part of the ongoing story. It is hoped to develop a fusion of widely varied voices and styles and media within a somewhat coherent framework. The ridiculous is highly welcome. Please edit your contributions. The idea is that the story is not planned, it evolves. So, if one writer or artist introduces a character or theme the next writer or artist can develop it, or not, as she or he chooses, as long as there is some kind of coherent link that makes it 'readable' (in the broadest sense of a readable 'text'). The idea partly came from a party scene in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, where characters' personalities are developed, and contemporary reading habits explored, through a joint storytelling game. I was thinking along the lines of Pynchon or Rabelais or Perec or something anti-novelistic when I thought of doing this, but perhaps an avante-garde soap opera could also be an apt description. I am reminded of a drawing game I learned in primary school where each child draws a section of a body, folds it over to conceal it, and passes the page onto another child who contributes the next section, and so on, until the page ends and an inconsistent creature is revealed which doesn't conform to any kind mould other than that the pieces fit together. Also think: serial, like Dickens or Conan-Doyle, where each contribution to a larger story is written periodically (The Pickwick Papers), or each short story contributes to a larger reality (the myth of Sherlock Holmes), but with different authors (as in a television series) and, of course, with different media. Ok, here's the bare bones of the plot idea that I've been tossing around. Characters:Robin: Human who wakes up from a black out and finds herself in an odd new world. She doesn't know how she got there.Jezik: Dragon-kin who's a biologist for lack of a better term. He buys Robin of of a merchient who finds her and brings her into a market. His curiosity to find out more about this "near-elf thing" is what starts off the majority of the story.Daveth: A Drake-kin who's a friend and employee of Jezik who does most of the grunt work, collecting new specimens and delivering messages.Those are the main characters right now.Onto the story!PLOT: The story opens with Robin waking up in a caged wagon thats moving into a city. She doesn't know how she got there or where she is. When the caravan that the wagon is in stops and sets up, she realises that she (like a few other creatures in other cages) are to be sold. Here she makes a few moves to get out, showing more then animal intellect by trying to pick and manipulate the lock on her cage rather then slamming into it like the others. This gets the attention of Daveth who points her out to Jezik who has been browsing the other cages. They go over to look at her and after an exchange (and Robin getting over the inital shock of seeing something that looks like a humanoid dragon), Jezik decides to buy her, not having seen a specimen like her before.The merchant unlocks the cage and moves in trying to slip a coller around Robin's neck and not succeding as Robin manages to deck him. She makes a bolt to get out, but is caught by Daveth who holds her while Jezik puts the coller on.Cut to Jezik's lair, where the Dragon-kin has been pouring through his books trying to find what Robin is. The closest thing he can find is an elf and she is definetly not that. Curiosity getting the best of him, he decides to go travel to northern mountains and cunsult with his old mentor to see if he's ever seen anything like Robin.OK, that's what I have so far. I have other ideas to fallow this, but I wanted to get the kinks out of this first instalment. I would also like input on things like: Should Robin be able to speak the language? In most fantasy stories like this the person transfered to the new world can speak the same language, so I thought maybe a language barrier would be intersting to deal with for the first issue or so.I'm Feeling: nerdy (4 comments | Leave a comment)

I don't know how many people saw it, but there was a contest going on in Wizard magainze, issue #147, for writers/creators.**( Get Your Comic Idea PublishedCollapse )**The only downside to this contest appears to be that you essentially sign away your rights to your story if you win. Possibly a bad thing if it's a story you have a lot invested in it emotionally. Group looked interesting. I hope it grows. Perhaps you can pimp it on usenet or some other forums. Anyways, my intro is thus: I am currently a cartoonist who doesn't draw. I'm just looking for inspiration and etc. I'm not terribly interested in becoming a professional comic artist at the moment, but it was an old dream of mine. Maybe one day it'll come true but it's not high on my priority list. Maybe if you guys post enough fun stuff, I will get back on that track. So hopefully people see this post and join up.As for my credentials, I have enough to get me a free "professional attendee" badge at comic con international in san diego (the biggest, most important comic convention in the US, you all are going, yes?). I've been published in about 6-7 real print comics and I've been involved in what could have been a real manga drawn in Japan by Japanese artists. The gory details are on the about page of my webcomic. Er, I do have some experiences being a freelancer drawing for a publisher and how I dealt with it, etc. It's been a while, so I may be a bit rusty but I still remember what it was like. I also am acquianted with a main artist on a regularly published small-press comic, but it's not a big old friendship that I can contact her anytime I want.
