Democracy as a system of governance is supposed to allow extensive representation and inclusiveness of as many people and views as possible to feed into the functioning of a fair and just society. The ideal of pluralism gives the hope that men and women of different religions, ethnicities, races, ideologies, and world views can live together in a democratic society where they govern themselves and are free and equal citizens. However in the established democratic states, there are many issues and challenges that not only make democracy impossible but also threaten some of its foundations. There have been numerous cases where democracies have seen leaders elected on lower vote- turnouts.
