Summary

The formation and histochemistry of the egg membranes is followed. Evidence from electron micrographs is presented. A unique kind of hatching is recorded for this species. An attempt was made to quantitate the reduction in size associated with the growth and maturation of the oncosphere.

Many questions remain to be answered concerning the development of tapeworms. We need more precise information on the constituent parts (what is the nature of the “vitelline” material in the oocyte?). The function of the various capsules and envelopes should be elucidated (How permeable are they? Do they have any function in active transport or ionic balance?). A good foundation is being laid in this area of research and it seems very likely that the impetus will carry on to a much better understanding through the use of advanced techniques.
