Using fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA), this study identifies configurations that lead to higher export intensity for SMEs from Colombia. Configurations are combinations of: (1) source of vicarious internationalization knowledge, (2) network structure, and (3) export stimuli. The results, based on data gathered from 16 exporting SMEs; show that the combination of strong ties, internal stimuli, a proactive behavior, and network relationships as source for vicarious internationalization knowledge spur export intensity. It also shows that weak ties, combined with external stimuli, reactive behavior, and vicarious knowledge acquired from government advisors or consultants, results in high export intensity. This fsQCA-based study thereby helps to unravel some of the complexities conducive to achieve export intensity. Finally, we propose a model to help enrich the existing knowledge about the causal configurations for achieving high export intensity in SMEs from Colombia.

To reach the main objective, we make a brief description of the international trade relation between China and Latin America for the last 15 years, also, a review of the investment flows in different economic sectors, and lastly, a description of the political and diplomatic relation between Latin America and China. From this, it can be inferred that the bilateral relation is prominently framed by the trade of commodities from Latin America to China and the Chinese investment in the sourcing of natural resources.

Neo-Gramscians argue that the real aim of these institutions is to maintain the hegemony. By doing so, the capitalist system has been spread in the world system through free trade policies driven by the WTO and through conditional loans given by the IMF and the World Bank. Liberal Institutionalists argue that international institutions have make
cooperation possible and have facilitated the path to achieve common objectives reducing the influence that the hegemon has exerted over them.
