A double chin is a common concern and can develop due to factors such as weight gain, ageing, genetics or reduced skin elasticity. While there is no strong scientific evidence that face yoga alone can get rid of a double chin, some facial exercises may help strengthen and tone the muscles around the jaw, chin and neck. When combined with a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise, face yoga can be a useful addition to your routine.

Neck stretch and chin lift

Neck stretch and chin lift

Sit or stand with your back straight and gently tilt your head backwards so you are looking towards the ceiling. Pucker your lips as if you are trying to kiss the ceiling and hold the position for 5 to 10 seconds before relaxing. Repeat 10 to 15 times. This exercise engages the muscles in the neck and under the chin, which may help improve muscle tone over time.

Tongue press exercise

Look up towards the ceiling and press your tongue firmly against the roof of your mouth. While keeping the tongue pressed, slowly lower and raise your chin. You should feel the muscles under your chin and along your neck working. Repeat this movement 10 times. Avoid forcing the motion, as excessive strain can lead to neck discomfort.

Jaw jut exercise

Tilt your head back slightly and move your lower jaw forward until you feel a gentle stretch under your chin. Hold for a few seconds and then return to a relaxed position. Repeat 10 to 15 times. This exercise targets the muscles around the jawline and may help improve definition when practised consistently.

Place a small soft ball, roughly the size of a tennis ball, under your chin. Gently press your chin down against the ball and release. Repeat 15 to 20 times. This movement works the muscles beneath the chin and can be an effective way to add resistance to your face yoga routine.

Don't rely on face yoga alone

Face yoga can help improve muscle engagement in the jaw and neck area, but it is not a guaranteed solution for reducing a double chin. If excess fat is the main cause, overall weight management through a balanced diet, regular physical activity and adequate sleep is likely to have a greater impact. Consistency is key, and combining healthy habits with facial exercises may offer the best chance of seeing visible improvements over time.
