I'm really annoyed with all these "epic fail!!!1!" people. Obviously, everyone has a right to dislike the book, and I do totally understand why some people do. But to trash Stephenie Meyer and sling around words like "epic fail" when she's the reason they're here in this fandom to begin with?

If writing a wildly popular love story that engrosses people around the world, inspires tons of fansites and fanfiction, etc. etc. makes one a sucky writer and an epic failure, then sign me up.

Breaking Dawn was awesome and well-done (and surprisingly violent in one particular scene) and I loved it.

Hmph.

TEXT

------

The message she sent to Jim was simple:

You didn't misinterpret anything.

He saw it the morning after, hungover, sitting in Karen's kitchen. Judging by the time stamp on the message, he must have been passed out on his desk when she'd sent it. He snapped his phone shut and raked his fingers through his messy hair.

Karen walked in with a cup of coffee, and he couldn't help but return her beaming smile. Even with her hair wrapped up in a towel-turban and her face scrubbed clean of makeup, she was beautiful. And he'd be lying if he said he hadn't gone to sleep satisfied. He'd be lying if he said he didn't wake up and smile when he saw her beside him. But he'd also be lying if he said there was no one else he'd rather see there.

"Sober now, Halpert?" Karen asked, offering him the mug.

"Unfortunately, yeah. Do you have aspirin?" A time machine, maybe?

The aspirin didn't help; neither did the sales calls or the multiple rounds of Call of Duty. Several times he opened a new email message and started typing pbeesl- before changing his mind. He almost called her at lunch after he finished his "big tuna" sandwich.

Karen poked her head into the break room, saw that they were alone, and sat beside him. "Hey... not to be all weird or anything, but last night... um... all I want to say is no pressure, okay? I know you were really drunk, and I don't expect anything more. Unless you want to. Or something." She laughed self-consciously.

"Thanks," he said. He reached for her hand and ran his thumb over her fingers. "It was great. Not that I remember everything, but it was great. I'm just not... This makes me the biggest jerk in the world, doesn't it?"

"No, really, it doesn't. Like I said, I understand totally if you don't want anything more to come of it."

"So am I going to get my head blown off during the game today?"

She grinned. "Okay, first, it's not a game. It's a training exercise. And second, what would make me stop now?"

"Good. Exactly what I wanted to hear."

He liked Karen, he honestly did. But there was a vulnerability -- a sweetness -- in Pam that he missed. Pam was the person he wanted to find beside him in the morning, and Pam was the person he wanted to hold when he fell asleep. None of that had changed.

After lunch he watched the clock in the lower corner of his computer, willing it to move faster. When he got home, he would call Pam. He wondered if it would be possible to go back to his old position in Scranton. He pictured her in that blue dress she'd worn on casino night, and he pictured her smiling when he came back.

At 4:50, his email notifier popped up, and he clicked it to read the new message.

Hey Jim, sorry about that message from before. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. I just had a lot to drink at Kelly's party last night. You don't need to reply to this if you don't want to. -Pam

He didn't reply to it; he didn't know what his reply could have said. 5:00 arrived at last, and he draped his coat over his arm and left with Karen.

Or a ficlet-let. Jim/Pam, obviously. Missing moment. :D

HOW HE KNEW THAT

---

He'd always had a tendency to notice things that other people didn't, like the way his mother smiled when she put her wedding ring back on after washing dishes. He was only a little kid, but she did it every time, and it was hard not to notice. Whenever his father folded the laundry, he would fold his own clothes haphazardly, but take time and care on his wife's. And Jim noticed that neither of them ever noticed. He got it into his head, then, that love was often not noticed.

Pam Beesly loved mixed berry yogurt. It didn't take long at all to notice that. He ate lunch with her whenever he could, and that cup of yogurt was always sitting there between them. The type of sandwich might change, and some days it might even be salad, but if there was yogurt, it was made of berries, and those berries were mixed.

So it was almost (almost) subconsciously that he picked up the pack of mixed berry yogurt the next time he was grocery shopping, as if pretty, funny Pam Beesly was waiting for him at home, depending on him to bring back that delicious mixed-berry flavor. He left the pack in the fridge at work, and he never expected her to say anything.

As it turned out, she did say something, walking past his desk with Kelly later that morning. "I mean, I know it's a little thing, right? But it just reminds me how sweet Roy can be sometimes. How many guys would think to restock their girlfriends' yogurt at work? Honestly?" She laughed, and then Kelly started reciting one of her epic stories, and the two voices faded away.

After that, Pam was never out of yogurt. Jim saw her bright smile whenever a new pack appeared in the fridge, and it became impossible not to bring it. He kept track of her supply, made sure she had enough, checked the expiration dates. That was how he knew, one day in October, that he had to step in and save the day, as it were.

He walked to her desk and leaned over, returning her smile with a sheepish grin. "Um, this might sound weird -- and there's no reason for me to know this -- but that mixed berry yogurt you're about to eat has expired," he said.

And that's when she knew.

BEING PERFECT, BEING THEM

-----

"Hey."

"Hey."

They looked at each other, looked in opposite directions, looked at each other again, and laughed.

"Oh, my God, this is awful. This is so not us," she said.

"Right, because we are not awful."

"We are awesome."

"Exactly."

And that's how their first date began: the awkward silence, the swift return to their usual selves, the grabbing of her purse, the cheery goodbye waves to the camera crew, and the walk to his car. Now they were here, full of Italian food, parked outside her apartment.

"You know what the best part about tonight was?" he said. He reached for her hand, and even that small privilege felt hugely significant. "It didn't even feel like a date. I mean... I don't mean it wasn't special, I meant--"

"I know what you meant. It was great." She looked to the side, then laughed.

"What?"

"Do you ever... Okay, this is so stupid. Do you ever catch yourself, like, away from the office and looking off to give the camera a reaction shot? As if it's going to be there? I do that all the time."

"They have doctors for that. In fact--" He took out his wallet and flipped through it. "I have the name of one in here somewhere, because I do it, too."

"Do you want to come in?"

He had definitely not expected that. He felt suddenly conscious of his blood pounding in his ears. He lowered his wallet and looked at her. "You know I do. Do you want me to come in?"

She smiled in that shy way of hers. He had never seen a woman with a prettier smile than hers, and he didn't believe he was biased in thinking so. "Yeah. I just don't want things to be weird," she said.

"Nothing's been weird so far, has it? It's just been... us."

"It's been perfect."

"Exactly."

Her apartment was pretty much as he'd imagined it would be, very warm and casual, slightly messy. She had lots of photographs.

"There's one thing we need to get out of the way," he said after she closed the door behind them. "I'm going to need to see your high school yearbook."

Her mouth fell open in disbelief and laughter. "No! There is no way I'm showing you that!"

"It's only fair. C'mon. Bring it out, Beesly."

They kicked off their shoes and sat together on her sofa. He draped his arm around her shoulders, and she settled against him, and he checked off an item on his mental list, Things I Desperately Want to Do. She pointed out her school picture, which was bad, as these things always must be. But it was adorably bad, from the glasses to the bored, lopsided smile.

"Wow."

"Yeah." She laughed. "Are we even now?"

"Absolutely."

She closed the book and set it aside, then looked up at him. "So... I didn't want to bring this up, but... Karen? I mean, are you two...?"

"It's over. I guess there'll be one more Talk to tie up loose ends, but no, that's over."

"What about the job at corporate?"

"It lacks a big incentive that the Scranton branch offers." He shifted more towards her and kissed her, amazed at how comfortable it was to hold her. She slid his jacket from his shoulders and rested one hand on the back of his neck, her fingers threading into his hair.

"I should have told you that night," she said softly, "that I'm in love with you, too. I have been for a long time."

They didn't sleep together that night. Well, they slept together. Her bed was small, and they fell asleep pressed against each other, looking at each other, whispering and giggling and kissing until late. Being them, being perfect. And in the morning, they woke up and smiled at each other.

"Jim."

"Pam."

I guess some people might find it morbid or weird, but I see it as a mix of scavenger hunt, history, driving, and photography - and you get to help people. I'm sure most of you have heard of findagrave.com, where you can visit the virtual memorials/shrines of famous and ordinary people.

A couple of weeks ago, I found another feature on the site. If you join and enter your zip code, you can view requests that people have posted for your area... requests for photos of their relatives' headstones! Last week I posted a request for my grandfather's headstone in New Jersey, and someone took a picture of it for me. And this weekend, I drove around my hometown and took six photos that people had requested. Several of them were at a tiny church cemetery about ten miles out of town. I had never heard of this place, so it was cool to drive out there.

So there you have it. If you're interested in doing this, btw, the link to join is here. https://edeainfj.livejournal.com/494108.html?view=comments#comments nerdy public 5 https://edeainfj.livejournal.com/494033.html Sat, 01 Mar 2008 05:57:07 GMT edeainfj https://edeainfj.livejournal.com/494033.htmlBehind the cut is a series of scans of something I found in my mother's files tonight while I was looking for genealogy stuff. These are contracts to transport cotton, tobacco, and furs down the river to New Orleans, and they're dated from throughout 1817. And it's weird because I'm thinking, "Jane Austen was alive when this was written," and a few months later, "Jane had been dead for two months." :(

There's one document from 1816, and I thought, "Jane Austen had just published Emma and was writing Persuasion when this was written."

It's so weird.

And yes, I realize I am also weird. https://edeainfj.livejournal.com/493575.html?view=comments#comments strange public 3
