Non-fiction writers' group Stranger Than Fiction is a new monthly writers’ group based in Edinburgh for non-fiction authors.We are looking for members who are serious about their work (aiming for publication; not necessarily previously published) and serious about improving it. We encourage constructive criticism – the group is friendly and informal but to be useful in today’s difficult publishing world, we want everyone to receive honest feedback. Writers of any genre of non-fiction are welcome.Our next meeting will be Weds 23rd June 2010, the Meadow Bar at 8pm.The meeting will be quite relaxed so no need to panic! We’ll be talking about how we see the group working and what everyone can hope to get out of it, so just come along and see if it’s what you’re looking for in a writers’ group.It would be great for us to know how many people plan to turn up so do let us know. Participants Wanted!! Jogging! Hello!I am l student at Edinburgh University hoping to finish her PhD in the next year. If you are thinking about becoming more active over the beautiful summer months then please think about participating in my study.If you chose to join in, you will be allocated to one of two groups. One group will request you attend a jogging group once a week. The other group requires you to try going for a jog on your own once a week.Ideally you'll be a student, or at least free at 12:30pm on a Tuesday OR Thursday for the jogging group with JogScotland which starts at Teviot Place/outside McEwan Hall. I'd like everyone to start from the 23rd of June (which coincidently is my birthday).You will complete a questionnaire before you start, after 5 weeks and after 10 weeks. After this time I would love to do some interviews to hear your opinions and thoughts! Even if you go once to the group or out yourself, and hate it, or just can't seem to find the time to continue, I still want to hear from you. Your views are important to me! Edinburgh College of Art I'm thinking about applying to the Edinburgh College of Art for my Masters in Graphic Design. Being from the US, I don't know much about the school (except what I can find on their website). Guarantor Woes Dear Edinburgh,Firstly a few apologies, some may feel that this is not necessarily Edinburgh related, but a broader flat-letting problem, moreover, this may have been asked before (I scanned 'memories' but couldn't find anything specifically relating to this), if the mods believe either of these is true, please feel free to delete.Anyway, my girlfriend and I are currently flat-hunting and we discovered a place that was perfect. Unfortunately this flat was let by (or rather managed by) Edinburgh Property Management (hereafter EPM). As part of EPMs management all tenants are assessed as to their ability to pay, fair enough, but herein lies the rub; both myself and my partner are students, myself PhD, my girlfriend undergrad. Because of this we each supposedly require guarantors, however we are struggling to get them, myself well my parents live a long way away and don't particularly pay a large part in my day-to-day life anymore (being 27 and all) and the girlfriend, well thay are particularly worried about being locked into a contract with no fixed end date (fair enough).So we come to you, does anyone have any wisdom (received or experienced) regarding how to get round this thorny problem? I think because of the nature of EPMs procedures we are always going to struggle and not be able to let with them, but are all Edinburgh's letting agents the same (this is the first time I've let with a professional letting agency), or will we be able to get by with other companies without guarantors? If so which ones; we have viewings with Littlejohns and Factotum tomorrow. To me this is all a rather redundant exercise as we both certainly have enough funds between us to pay the rent, and personally I have funding equivalent to a reasonable wage and tutor at the university on top and so am rather troubled by being grouped together with the "students" rather than the "professionals". So does anyone have anyway around this?Moreover, if anyone knows of any good 1 or 2 bed flats available from August for between £400 and £600 a month, please get in touch.Please help.X-posted to  edinburgersCurrent Mood:  Troubled (Comment on this) |

About Napier I am having a bit of a hard time figuring out what kind of reputation Napier University has in Scotland and the UK. I would be attending post-grad for Journalism, and I know that program is stronger than their others, but I was wondering if you would be willing to weigh in on your impressions of their "rep" around town.I'm also wondering if you could give the girl some advice on whether or not the city is so stunningly amazing that it would overshadow the mid-tier-ness of the Uni. I'm looking to be so impressed by the city that I don't so much care (totally subjective, I know, just looking for personal opinion).School is expensive, I'm giving up a lot here to leave, soooooo...hence the major neurosises.Thank You + 1000!E-penpals in the same boat are welcome, dependent on sanity. Residence Question Hello, everyone! I am starting my MSC in Education in September 2007 and have a question about university accommodation.As an international postgrad, I know that I am guaranteed housing (and thank heavens for that). However, other than that which I could glean from the sparse details on the accommodation website, I have no idea what I'm getting myself into. This is where you lovely folks come in (I hope).I currently live in what I'd call an ideal student situation: I'm in a self-catered university residence in a small, 3-person flat. We each have our own bedrooms and share a full kitchen, lounge, and 1.5 washrooms (that is, a total of 2 toilets, 2 washbasins, and 1 shower). My flatmates are both men, which seems to make me far happier than when I was living with women, as much as I have adored my previous female flatmates (just in case it isn't clear from my name, I'm a woman).Would I be able to find a similar set-up in Edinburgh's accommodation offerings? I know I could go hunting for a non-university flat, but I'm worried that that would severely limit my social opportunities.To re-cap, this is what I'm looking for (in a perfect world, at least):- Self-catered flat- Shared with 1-3 other people, ideally men or at least mixed gender- Full kitchen facilities shared with no more than 3 other people (I love cooking and, on account of numerous dietary issues, need to actually have space/accessibility to do so on a daily basis)- En suite, if possible, but sharing is fine as long as there's a low ratio of people-to-toiletsThank you so much in advance! Help required for MSc Dissertation Hello all,I’m a student at Napier University writing an MSc dissertation on teaching methods for dyslexics in the world of IT. I’m really interested in how people have found higher education compared to secondary school, and in particular dyslexics who are learning to program, especially in object-oriented languages. How well has it been taught to you? Is there enough support for you eg: extra time in exams, more accessible textbooks etc? Do you have any suggestions on how teaching might be improved in this area? My work colleague has a single train-ticket from Cambridge to Edinburgh for the 25th March (Sunday). The train leaves Cambridge at 17.02 and getting into Edinburgh 22.44 with two changes. My colleague paid £38 for the ticket but all offers will be considered. So do you have a partner or loved one in Cambridge and fancy geeting a cheap(ish) ticket back? Laptop help X Posted all overMy IBM t20 lost most of its keys yonks ago and as I am travelling soon I don't want to have to keep attatching a keyboard to it so I have ordered an actual IBM laptop keyboard. However I have no idea how to go about fitting it so does anyone know where I could get it done cheaply or (even better) anyone who could actually fit it themselves?
