そもそも9割把握していれば英文は読めるの？
英語マンガ「**DEATH NOTE (デスノート)**」1巻を例に調べてみました！

何割の英単語を知っていれば良いのか？
一般的な英文の9割をカバーする英単語リストがあるが……
明治学院大学の教授らにより2013年公開された新基本英単語リスト (New General Service List、NGSL) は、一般的な英文の9割をカバーすると言われています。序盤に覚える英単語リストとして活用できます。
しかし、根本的な問題として文章の9割の英単語を理解できれば、内容が理解できるのでしょうか？ 9割知っていれば理解できそうですが……実際のトコロ、気になりますよね？

本記事では、DEATH NOTE (デスノート) 1巻の日英のセリフを一部抜き出し、難易度の高い単語を消しながら「何％の単語が理解できれば大体の内容を把握できるのか？」 を確認しました。
以下のように、英単語と、その英単語に対応する日本語部分を塗りつぶして確認していきます。

確認条件
英文はDEATH NOTE 1巻 (41～49ページ) を利用
現在、日本マンガの英語版は電子書籍で簡単に入手することができます。本記事では、いくつかある英語版マンガの中で、以下を満たす「DEATH NOTE (デスノート)」のセリフを利用することにしました。
- ファンタジー用語や造語が少ない
- 現在日本が舞台 (追加で必要となる背景知識が少ない)
- セリフ量が一定以上あり、内容が簡単すぎない
具体的に抜き出す箇所は1巻41～49ページ、主人公である夜神月がデスノートの効果を認め、「新世界の神となる」と発言するまでの場面です。名 (迷) 場面ですよね！

主人公である夜神月（やがみ らいと）は警察庁刑事局長の一人息子で、全国模試一位の秀才高校生。彼はある日、死神リュークが落とした黒いノート、「デスノート」を拾う。このノートには、名前を書かれた人間は必ず死ぬと説明が記載されていた。夜神月はお遊び気分で試してみたが、それは本物の死のノートであった。彼は己の「正義」に基づき、世の中の悪人に制裁を下していくのだが……
難易度の高い英単語を塗りつぶし、実際に内容が理解できるか確認する
具体的な確認方法ですが、難易度の高い英単語を塗りつぶし、その状態で文章の内容が理解できるかを確認します。また、英文だけではイメージがつきづらいため、該当する原作日本語の文章も併記し、塗りつぶした英文に該当する日本語を塗りつぶします。
英単語の難易度は英単語のアルクの頻出英単語リスト SVL 12000を基準に決めます。
なお、英語版のセリフは原作の直訳ではありません。そのため、除外する英単語に直接該当する原作のセリフが存在しない場合は、概ね該当する場所を私の独断で決めています。

12000語もの頻出順リスト
本サイトではアルクのSVL 12000を基準に英語のマンガやドラマ、英単語集などの英単語レベル解析を行っています。本記事でも、英単語の難易度の基準はこのSVL 12000とします。
SVL 12000はアルク社が公開している英単語リストです。英単語の頻出順に 1000語/1レベル で区切られており、SVL 1 ～ 12 の12レベル存在します。また、単語集 SVL Vol.1 ～ Vol.4 の4冊に3000語ずつ収録されています。

確認結果

総語数
抜き出した9ページ分のセリフの総語数は527語 (固有名詞や数値は除外) です。
英単語の種類
英単語の重複を除外すると211語となり、SVLのレベル別に分類した結果がフラグの内容です。SVL 1に属する英単語は143種類登場し、211語のうちの68%を占めているということですね。
なお、SVL 範囲外となったのは、OkayとInternet (インターネット) です。

結論
今回抜粋したデスノートの文章では、総語数の82％を理解できていたとしても、登場する英単語の60%しか把握できていないことになります。総語数80％も分かれば何とかなるのではないか、と最初に考えていた方は、思ったよりも読めない部分が多いことに驚いたのではないでしょうか。
読める読めないは個人の感覚にもよるので一概には言えませんが、上のサンプル英文で確認する限りでは、マンガや小説では**誤解なく文章をある程度理解するには英単語の80％ (総語数の90%)**を把握していればなんとかなりそうな感じはありますね。つまり、前述のグラフの内容から少なくともSVL 1～2までの2000語は覚えている必要があります。文章が長くなるほどレベルが高い英単語は増えていきますので、デスノート1巻丸ごとで考えればSVL 1～4の4000語必要となります。概ね高校3年レベルでしょうか。学校英語については以下の記事も参照ください。
一般的には総語数の95% or 98% の英単語を把握している必要があると言われる
英文を理解するにはどの程度の英単語を把握していれば良いのかについて、いくつか研究はありますが概ね以下2通りのように言われています。
- 英文を「楽しむ」には総語数の95%を理解している必要がある
- 英文を「きちんと理解する」には総語数の98%を理解している必要がある
マンガであっても英文には違いないので、楽しむことを目的とするのであれば総語数の95%をカバーできるレベルが目安です。絵による補正があるため、知らない英単語の比率が多少高くてもある程度の内容は理解できますが、英文を楽しむにはやはりそれらりの語彙力が必要です。本サイトでは英語マンガなどのレビュー＆単語レベル解析も行っていきますので、自分の語彙力で総語数の95％がカバーできそうな作品を探す際の参考にしていただければと思います。
