1. (travel) A fare for travel by land, air, or water which is less expensive than the regular fare, and which usually depends on special conditions, such as round-trip travel, payment in advance, or restrictions in duration of stay.
   • 1869 January, Regulations of the Railway Clearing House, James Truscott & Son (London), p. 109 (Google preview):
     Bands of Musicians conveyed in ordinary advertised Excursion Trains are charged the full excursion fare, but when accompanying Guaranteed Excursions, or travelling in Excursion Trains to Brass Band Contests, they are conveyed at half the Excursion Fare.
   • 1964 Dec. 27, "The Field of Travel," New York Times (retrieved 20 Oct 2015):
     As of Jan. 1, Pan American will offer lower round‐trip economy excursion fares in some instances.
   • 2014 Feb. 5, Simon Calder, "of the Week: A Boat," New York Times (retrieved 20 Oct 2015):
     The excursion fare of £64 return, for trips of up to six nights, includes a berth in an "economy" cabin.
