From Proto-West Germanic *hūʀiju (“hire”), from the verb *hūʀijan, from Proto-Germanic *hūzijaną, from Proto-Indo-European *kūs- (“price, hire”). Cognate with Old Frisian hēre (“hire”), Old Saxon hūria (“lease, rent”), Middle Dutch hūre (“lease, rent”).
