Research paper thumbnail of Re-reading Fanon: Language, Literature, and Empire

Fanon’s works are by far the most influential source in the production of postcolonial criticism and have been used for discussions of colonizer-colonized relationship and decolonization involving issues as varied as violence, revolution, political actions, ethics, love, humanism, intellectualism, language and literature. This chapter, however, seeks to continue the debate over the significance of Fanonian perspectives on language of empire and the national literature. Fanon discusses the role of colonial language in colonization and argues that it leads to subjugation and feelings of dependency and inadequacy. He also proposes the idea that native writers should return to tradition and write the national literature in an indigenous language to ‘shake’ the natives in order to battle colonialism. While closely examining his thoughts on colonial language and national literature, this chapter presents how postcolonial African writers return to tradition and what language they choose in writing the national literature.

One of the largely unknown calamities of World War One is that several non-European countries such as Persia suffered a great deal because of the War. Although Persia declared neutrality when the war broke out, it became the battleground for the Ottoman, the Russians and the British. Immersed in its own civil war, Persia then had to witness the battle between Russia-Britain with the German supported Ottomans. This, along with some other factors, such as natural factors and the incompetency of the central government, caused great famine in Persia in the last two years of the war killing 9 million people. However, as one of the greatest tragedies of the 20th century, termed here as ̳Holomine‘, this calamity is largely unknown or forgotten. By studying the history of Persia before and during the Great War, this chapter examines the reasons for v...

These representations, manifested to justify Western presence in the East, pervade even after the tragic events of 9/11. The West, especially the United States, now has to exercise new strategies to justify their imperial ‘war on terror’ project. The post-9/11 Western mass media and visual discourses are still fraught with stereotypes that consolidate stereotypical representations. Thus, by deconstructing the layers of Western misrepresentations of the Orient and studying the history of visual imperialism, this paper investigates, in the course of post-9/11 contexts, the grammar of visual imperialism in representing the East and Muslims have both negative and positive depictions. However we reveal that even the positive depictions would eventually consolida...

The scholars in this collection illustrate how the writing-back paradigm engages in a conversation and paves the way for a “dialogical and pluri-versal” world where the Rest is no longer excluded. Among the important features of this book is that it presents ways for “decoloniality” and “epistemic disobedience.” This book will be of interest to scholars and students of all Social Science and Humanities disciplines but it is particularly important for those in the disciplines of sociology, postcolonial studies, cultural studies, literature, and theory and philosophy of Social Sciences and Humanities.

While the essays in this book analyze a range of circumstances that foreground issues of memory, history and narrative, this book offers primary approaches to understanding the reconstruction of historical memories. Moving across geographical borders and political boundaries, this book seeks to link the past with the present as this linkage is essential for a good understanding of the condition of being human. It also highlights that reconstructing historical memory, which redefines the past and national identity, significantly affects the interpretation of the present and the perspective about future. This book increases public consciousness in changing the narratives around what reconstruction of historical memories means and what we can learn from it. There is much in the book that has never been explored in books of this ilk. As such this book offers a wide range of arguments and approaches and provides a powerful case for the importance of reconstruction of historical memories.

It deals with fixed and stereotypical visual representations and explores alternative and challenging visual representations which reconstruct and dismantle existing belief systems. It approaches the topic from a vantage point of diverse multiple perspectives. Covering issues from Brunei, Iran, Egypt, and England and cyberspace, essays examine the visual cultures of how Islam and Muslim people are understood, misunderstood, misrepresented, or even embraced visually. Scholars in this volume draw on historical paintings, books and their covers, photography, and news to demonstrate the diversity and sometimes contradictory visual cultures that construct and adhere meaning to how Islam and Muslim people are seen.

The chapter discusses factors which contributed to the spread of famine throughout Persia and explains how ca. 40% of the Persians expired.
