| This post will be updated with links and notes as the verse grows.Face Value is not being written in order. The first story arc contains four stories: "Face Value", "Burn", "Bumps in the road/Planting Roots" and "The Life That Was". If you haven't read anything from this 'verse before, I recommend reading those first to get an idea how they got together and how Lindsey fits in. The parts between those four fics are bits and pieces to flesh out the story so far. Everything after "The Life That Was" is established relationship. Not everything is posted in my journal yet. General Note: The offices of Leverage Consulting and Associates never moved to L.A. in this verse. That makes sense insofar that if they were set in Los Angeles, they would know about Wolfram and Hart from the start. And probably even saw Lindsey around since he was in the papers regularly. Click on the images for full size.To explain, we have an old house with a small attic that has a window. The outside of the house has brickwork, with a small hole where the window is. My Dad installed a box behind it, as a potential home for kestrels. He didn't have much hope, because usually kestrels choose their home much higher up (think clocktowers), but hey. And one day in spring of 2015, he's outside in our garden and hears a very specific bird cry. He looks up, and lo and behold, Mrs. Kestrel has decided to move in.Weeks later, it was finally clear that Mr. and Mrs. Kestrel succeeded in making a family - two baby falcons in the box! Wisely, my Dad had put a removable lid on the box so that he could peek inside, and one of the little guys reluctantly agreed to model. He certainly could compete to Grumpy Cat, but still :-)It's hard to believe that these fluffballs are gonna grow into majestic kestrels! Also, no worries, you can touch baby birdies (with caution, of course!), the parents don't mind the smell. As you will see.More fluff:Falcons don't build nests like blackbirds or storks, so this doesn't look very comfortable, but that's normal. They usually brood in rock holes, and the eggs lay on the bare ground, with maybe some leaves or feathers. But they grow up nicely. This is only two weeks later:And only a few days later, Falcons Junior were already pretty sassy, and apparently had decided that their weird landlord with the camera meant no harm at all.And, like in every family on earth, kids complain to their mother about their siblings."Mooooom! He took the best part of the mouse. Again!"Mrs. Kestrel in the middle, checking in on the kids and the landlord.Almost ready to fly! Only a few of the baby downy feathers left.And he is on its way too. Bye, little kestrel, good luckFor a few days, the younglings returned for the night, so Mrs. Kestrel had to check on her kids. So here we have a kestrel in a pear treeThe pear tree is about two metres away from our house, and this is the view from Dad's bedroom window, below the falcon box. And then I hear my Dad call "Elke, get here and bring your camera!!"Mrs. Kestrel had decided to sit on the windowsill. The bedroom window was open, she flew down from the tree and sat on the sill, looking inside. I could have touched her easily, that's how close she was. Completely unafraid, always on the watch, of course, but she didn't mind at all that we were moving around and taking pics. Here she is:Such a beautiful creature. We saw the family around for a few days more, and then they moved to new territories. Maybe they come back again another year, the box is open! But as a safety measure, I downloaded all my pics from LJ image hosting. You never know... and I have no idea about storage space as soon as I go basic account, so before it gets cut off, I decided to save.And ugh... apparently I copypasted a lot of entries with a fixed font color. Yeah, yeah, heard it before. He has been calling us for weeks, but always only got my Dad who hung up as soon as heard an english speaking voice. And I had already googled the number and knew what they were up to (they tell you that you have a virus, and you need to install TeamViewer so that they could take over and get rid of it. Yeah, how about no.) So I cut him off and told him that I know it's a scam, that he would never get on my computer, and he should never call me again. He started to get a hissy fit. The two unwanted holes in my body (groin and tailbone) are still in healing process. Sigh. I can sit if the chair is comfy, I can work, but I'm still not allowed to do sports, so no gym, no ballet... *cries* And every morning clean out the wounds and bandage. And be patient. I am patient. I AM PATIENT. AAAARGH! *lol*Also, I got new glasses. Variofocal. I love them, but good ones are pretty expensive. And of course at the same time a molar tooth decided that it didn't like its filling any longer, and spat it out. And since it was the third time it did that, I needed a crown. *bank account crying in the distance* Well, at least I'm royalty now. *grin*In nicer news, I spent Easter weekend with my friends in Nürnberg (yes, you can buy ginger bread all year, no, the Christkind is NOT there all year) which was lovely. Pics to come! My Dad is doing good, always on the road, either on tour or for photo exhibitions. I'm glad he does that and not moping around at home :-)Work is getting better - after the Big Software Conversion of Doom with all its curses and hair tearing, it now works pretty well. Still some smoothing out to be done, but the basics work. Yay.And I finally broke my writer's block! "Enzian" only needed some minor edits and is now ready and posted. The next big monster story about amnesiac!Lindsey sits with 38.000 words and is not even remotely finished, oh dear... and some old comment fics need fleshing out and a good beta (havenward is not gonna be unemployed with me for quite a while...). Most important, I have fun writing again. Fandom wise I need to catch up with so many shows, it's not even funny. The Librarians, Teen Wolf, Doctor Who... but I saw the first seasons of Supergirl and The Flash, and loved them. Definitely sticking around for those. Also, Tyler Hoechlin as Superman. The second surgery went okay, it seems to be healing better now (I just jinxed it, did I...?), but as soon as that's done, they need to cut another fistula, this time left loin. And the doc had no other way than to give me some aenesthetics again and have a good close look. And lo and behold, an infection. One that couldn't be seen from the outside and didn't cause any pain, but made the wound say "Nah, I'm not closing up!" So he had to cut again. Luckily I didn't have to go to hospital again, I was out of his office within an hour. Now I'm written off again, back on the Ibuprofen that make me all sleepy, and armed with packages of bandages and glue. At least that's what it feels like on my poor butt :-)I have relocated my laptop to a higher table so I can use it standing up, so if my foggy Ibu-brain allows it, I will be editing pictures and hopefully continue writing. Because that's the good news - after a very long dry spell I started writing again. During my seaside holidays I managed about 3000 words for amnesiac!Lindsey (and Harry Dresden still hasn't shown up, sheesh, it's gonna be a monster!), I have started re-writing two older stories and try to establish a schedule. And it's fun again, I like that. I went back to work two weeks ago, which was ok. Boss had set up a standing table, so I could switch between sitting and standing. My tailbone did protest, but not too much, and the Mount Everest on my desk has shrunk noticeably. Yay. And now I'm taking my long-planned holidays. Friday I leave to the North Sea Shore, my to-go vacation for reloading batteries. I understand that she didn't want that. I still don't understand why she made that decision and didn't include us. Stopped talking to us, didn't answer to any question. Just silence. And that's what I feel when I visit her grave. Silence. I hope it ends one day.Still, I'm grateful that she didn't have to suffer for a long time, that it was painless in the end, that we were all there. Grateful for the support of family and friends. Dad and I are managing quite well, I think, just - people always say "Oh, you must miss her!" And yes, of course I do, but that part of me is still numb. I try to remember good times with my mom, try to remember the laughs and the fun, and all I get are scenes of that broken woman who gave up on life completely and wasted away in front of our eyes and didn't even attempt to fight. I know that she couldn't, I know that it was probably all for the better, i KNOW. Still. I'd like to have happier memories, please. She doesn't deserve this one-sided memory. People tell me that it takes time, and even longer than a year. Okay, then. Patience it is.Tags:random thingsMood:sad Note to self: the doctor says six to eight weeks for a reason. It's only been three weeks now, don't get impatient.*crickets*AAARGH! *lol* Changing bandages twice a day is exhausting. Sitting down for being online works for about half an hour, then it starts to hurt. Watching TV only works while lying on one side and propping myself up so that the TV screen is not tilted. After a while I cramp up and have to change position. Same goes for reading a book. Or I read/watch while standing, and switch to lying down once my back starts to hurt. Fun times, I tell you! *whines*On the other hand, it could be worse. I could still be in hospital, with only my smartphone and books. And a decidedly less comfortable bed. :-) But sometimes you just need a good frustration attack. I shall counter it with hot chocolate. *nods*And my nice boss stopped by to bring me some books I ordered and that got delivered to the office. And of course he rings the doorbell just when I'd stepped out ouf the shower. Cue me frantically grabbing my towel and looking out of the window. Oh hai boss, that's nice... yes, just drop the parcel on the doorstep, I'll get it as soon as I'm decent. Ahem. *gigglefit*And tomorrow I'm going to try the recipe for no bake Nutella cookies that honeyjojames tweeted me the other day. Two on my tailbone area, and two more "oh, while we're at it" on my left groin, apparently they saw those while operating and just took them out too. Which is good because hey, gone, but makes changing bandages a little complicated... :-)I was allowed to go home on Monday, but I need to see a doc every few days. And change bandages twice a day. Ow. Sleeping is okay (hello Ibuprofen), standing is okay, walking slowly too. Sitting works on some chairs with big cushions for about ten minutes... but at least I don't have to eat while standing up. That's what I did in hospital. Yup, fun. *lol*I'm written off for two weeks for now, but Doc already warned me that it can take up to six weeks. I barely made it two weeks in, and then caught a nasty stomach bug - you know, those who show up Saturday evening, stay for the night to make you throw up as often as possible, and then vanish for exactly a week only to come back with a vengeance. GAH. Took me about two weeks to get over it, with a nice stomach diet of mashed potatoes, porridge, chicken soup, yoghurt... *sigh*What was nice was a visit from a guy that my Dad got to know during his rehab last year - he lives in Berlin, but had a few vacation days left and asked if he could visit us. That was really nice - he was very friendly, we got along great. And it was very good for my Dad, because the whole christmas and New Year's Day times were pretty hard for us, and he was quite down. So that really cheered him up.Which was necessary, because there were still two doctor appointments left where we were scared of the outcome - first, the kidney thing, and second, a lump under the skin of his shin which hurt a little and didn't go away. And since we know now how fast something seemingly harmless can turn into something bad... well, the first February week was spent in a state of nervousness. But luckily this time everyting WAS harmless - kidneys are as functional as they can be for his age, the water probably came from varicoses. If it happens again, they have to check that out, but so far it didn't. And the lump got cut out (cue grumpy Dad because he wasn't allowed to do sports for three weeks) and turned out to be harmless, just like an encapsuled bruise. So yay :-)And as if that wasn't enough health worry, three weeks ago my gyn told me that the occult blood test came back positive and I needed to do a colonoscopy to find out if it was something bad. Oh hooray. *snort* Reasons for a positive include piles, mouth bleed (that's why you aren't allowed to floss three days before the test) or even taking aspirine which can cause microbleeds. Worse reasons of course are colon cancer, or diverticula. And my Mum had those, so naturally I was worried that I inherited them... and three weeks of worrying makes you antisocial, I can tell you! And the the date for the exam is the day after my birthday. YAY. No cake for me, then... *lol* But again, everything went smoothly, they found nothing worse than a few small piles. No diverticula, nothing. Phew. I took today off, the dizzyness is almost gone, but my butt is still sore. Ow. Plushy pillows are my friends! *lol*So the next doc dates are eye doc and dentist, they can't be that bad, right?But the good news is that I finally started writing again. That's true, the Face Value verse still lives, and Lindsey and Eliot are getting ready for new adventures! havenward and I set up a weekly report schedule, we're editing the Enzian story right now, and I have a monster story about amnesiac!Lindsey in the works which will eventually cross over with the Dresden Files. It currently sits at 30.000 words and Dresden isn't even anywhere near them... oh dear... *g*But I think it's kind of a positive loop - when I finally started working on the story again, I realized how much I missed them, and all of a sudden my muse is waking up and giving me new ideas. I like that :-)So, plans for this weekend include writing and baking birthday cakes.
