The main idea behind the Cluster Hypothesis is that multiple movement to the same head does not happen by moving separate phrases with the same feature to the target one by one, but by forming a cluster of these elements and then moving this cluster to the target position. It will be shown through comparing English and German structures that cross-linguistic differences arise due to the availability of cluster formation in particular languages; in section 4, a cluster-based analysis of Hungarian multiple questions will be carried out.

Apart from reviewing the most recent research literature in the field, this study aims to give an account of the experiences gained and solutions applied by the German section of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature (Faculty of Primary and Pre-School Education, Eötvös Loránd University) during the partial and full closure of universities and schools.

The theoretical framework followed in the paper is Syntax First Alignment (SFA), as developed in Newson (2010) and Newson & Szécsényi (2012).

It can involve, in traditional terms, substitution or adjunction. A means of deriving all these patterns will be developed in the article. My aim is to analyse structural properties of wh-interrogatives, their relationship to languageparticular base word orders and their interactions with another type of marked structure, topicalisation. The analysis is carried out in the theoretical framework of Optimality Theory (OT), not heavily relying on GB concepts. The language-specific clause structures will be analysed on the basis of Grimshaw's 'Economy of Structure in OT' (2001), by using mainly alignment mechanisms and without explicit economy constraints.
