This essay argues that theology and spirituality have been much connected in the works of Augustine, the mystics, the Anglican divines, and modern theologians, such as Schleiermacher and Tillich. Theologians will be left on the sidelines of our current spiritual reformation if they read these texts simply as "theology" and not as resources for spiritual insights and practical living.

Some may recall Jesus’ teaching of paying taxes to Caesar (Matt. 22:15–22) and his overthrowing the tables of the money changers at the temple (Matt. 21:12–13). Others may think of the ransom theory of atonement or the sale of indulgences during Luther’s time. In our contemporary world, some scholars have examined the relationship between money, the spirit of capitalism, and Christianity (Wariboko 2008; Tanner 2019). But not many have looked at how money has been inscribed historically in the cultural logic of the ways Christian doctrines have been formulated. Devin Singh’s book Divine Currency: The Theological Power of Money in the West (Singh 2018) makes an important contribution by filling this gap. Divine Currency argues that the Christian imagination has been infused with economic ideas, practices, and traditions since the patristic periods when some of the foundational Christian doctrines about God, Christ,...

The Reformation was a momentous event in the church and the history of Europe. This article examines three important legacies of the Reformation to look ahead to the future: the church and economic life; the priesthood of all believers; and the authority of the Bible. In many ways, the issues that Luther has raised-such as authority, church structure, priesthood and ministry, biblical interpretation, and the church's relation to economics and social issues-remain to this day and demand the church's critical attention. The Reformation was a watershed event that changed the church and the trajectory of Western civilization. Churches around the world have organized events, lectures, forums, and concerts to discuss this legacy and mark the 500th anniversary. Wittenberg, Germany, will host "Luther! 95 Treasures-95 People," a National Special Exhibition that follows the young Luther on his path to the Reformation and highlights the significance of his impact on people from the 16th century to the present day.

Teaching Theology & Religion, 2010

The volume provokes creative and critical thinking about practical theology. Its contributors conceptualize the field as a disciplined practice of imagination and skill residing at the confluence of Christian tradition and living ecclesial communities, and ask what such a construal of practical theology might mean for theological education. Given the significance of For Life Abundant, Teaching Theology and Religion asked three theological educators who are located in different regions, types of institutions, and fields, to review and respond to it. Rebecca Slough describes the volume's central questions and organization, and considers how it might contribute to the deliberations of a seminary faculty regarding a school's curriculum. Martha Stortz shows how the process and structure of For Life Abundant are in themselves illustrative of the conceptualization of practical theology for which it argues. Kwok Pui-lan notes the volumes strengths and goes on to probe its lacunae, particularly with regard to global, gender, and multi-cultural considerations relevant to a robust construal of pastoral theology in our time. While the authors of these three reviews and responses to the volume did not interact as they wrote them, together they comprise a conversation that should be ongoing. TTR invites further responses to the volume.

Globalization has arisen, in large part, from the colonial expansion of western European nations, through trade and commerce, migration, travel, and mass communication, and has resulted in a crisscrossing and blurring of national and cultural boundaries (12, 40, 145). The first century Marcan imperative for Christians to “go into all the world” that was at first aspirational is now the reality of Christianity in the twenty-first century.

In the second part of the book, a number of authors from around the world discuss the involvement of Anglican women in God's mission in a variety of contexts including the Mothers' Union, the Church Mission Society and the HIV-Aids pandemic.
