The proposed design enables contact-free power transfer to the launch vehicle while removing the need of switching power or AC induction. Passive damping windings are proposed to provide radial stability during launch. The 6-DOF dynamics of the launch vehicle, including the

In one embodiment the method includes forming a structure comprising layers of material extending along a first aperture path. The structure includes multiple concentric layer surfaces. A channel is formed in each of the layers of the material and along each of the multiple surfaces. Conductive material is positioned in each channel to provide a spiral configuration. The surfaces of multiple ones of the layers are of tubular shape. The layers of material are sequentially positioned one over another and about an axis along which first and second opposing coil end regions are formed. The layers are formed with a region of a first thickness and a shoulder region. The shoulder region is alternately formed in the sequence at one coil end region or at the other coil end region. Each shoulder region has a greater thickness than the first thickness.

ABSTRACT A conductor assembly and method for constructing an assembly of the type which, when con... more ABSTRACT A conductor assembly and method for constructing an assembly of the type which, when conducting current, generates a magnetic field or which, in the presence of a changing magnetic field, induces a voltage. In one embodiment the method provides a first layer that is tubular in shape with an outer surface along which a conductor may be positioned. A channel defining a first conductor path is formed in the first layer outer surface to create a pattern extending along the first layer. A first segment of conductor is placed in the first channel and defines a shape about an aperture region. After placing the first segment of conductor in the first channel, at least part of the first layer outer surface and at least part of the first segment of conductor are coated with a second layer. A second channel is formed along an outer surface of the second layer to define a second conductor path extending about the aperture region for placement of a second segment of conductor.

Following the fabrication and testing of several models, a baseline quadrupole design was selected and further optimized. The first prototype of the optimized design has achieved a conductor-limited gradient of 132 T/m in a 70 mm bore, with measured field harmonics within 10 parts in 10 4 . In parallel, a compact focusing doublet was fabricated and tested using two of the first-generation quadrupoles. After assembly in the cryostat, both magnets reached their conductor-limited quench current. Further optimization steps are currently underway to improve the performance of the magnet system and reduce its cost. They include the fabrication and test of a new prototype quadrupole with reduced field errors as well as improvements of the cryostat design for the focusing doublet. The prototype focusing units will be installed in the HCX beamline at LBNL, to perform accelerator physics experiments and gain operational experience. Successful results in the present phase will make superconducting magnets a viable option for the next generation of integrated beam experiments. r

This prototype was built using optimized racetracks, which increased the gradient and reduced the error fields in comparison with earlier versions of such quadrupoles. Design and fabrication features of the quadrupole are presented. Test results showed low training and no degradation of the magnet, good quality of the field, low joint resistance and low sensitivity to the ramp rate.
