The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) provided medical support to the Libyan Red Crescent branch in the city of Zawiya, following days of tension and armed clashes in the city, with the aim of strengthening humanitarian response efforts and alleviating pressure on the medical sector.
The ICRC said in a statement on its Facebook page that medical workers are facing increasing pressure to meet current humanitarian needs in Zawiya, noting that the support included donations of medical supplies, first-aid kits, and basic health supplies.
It added that this aid aims to ensure continued care for the injured and affected, given the conditions the city is facing, emphasizing that the response is part of humanitarian efforts aimed at supporting affected communities and strengthening the capacity of local response teams to continue their work during times of conflict.
On Friday, May 8, the city of Zawiya witnessed armed clashes following the city’s Security Directorate’s announcement of a “security operation targeting the hideouts of criminals, wanted individuals, and outlaws, as well as anyone involved in acts that threaten public security and social peace.”
