From Proto-Finno-Ugric *šärɜ- (“to come, to get, to reach; to spread”) + -eszt (causative verb-forming suffix).[1][2]

  1. (transitive) to let go of (to release from one's grasp)

      Because by that time, Borcsányi had seized his arm, held on tight, didn't let go of him.
  2. (transitive) to let (to allow someone to go somewhere)
