From Proto-Finnic *pagistak. Related to Estonian pagisema, Veps pagišta, Votic pakissõ, and possibly to Lule Sami báhko, Southern Sami baakoe and Northern Sami báhkkodit. The strong grade -k- has been levelled to all forms.
