eine webende Frau — a weaving woman
From Middle High German weben, from Old High German weban, from Proto-West Germanic *weban. Compare Dutch weven, English weave, Danish væve.
weben (weak or class 4 strong, third-person singular present webt, past tense webte or wob, past participle gewebt or gewoben, past subjunctive webte or wöbe, auxiliary haben)
- to weave
- to intertwine (to twine together)
- (archaic) to sway back and forth, to swing, to ramble
- 1744, Friedrich von Hagedorn, Die Landlust[1], [2], verses 9–12:
Es webet, wallt und spielet / Das Laub um jeden Strauch, / Und jede Staude fühlet / Des lauen Zephyrs Hauch.
They sway, they undulate, and play / The leaves round every bush, / And every shrub it feels / The balmy Zephyr's brush. - 1790–1829, Goethe, Faust, verses 392–397:
Ach! könnt’ ich doch auf Berges-Höh’n, / In deinem lieben Lichte gehn, / Um Bergeshöhle mit Geistern schweben, / Auf Wiesen in deinem Dämmer weben, / Von allem Wissensqualm entladen, / In deinem Thau gesund mich baden!
Oh! could I but on mountain highs, / Walk onward in thy lovely light, / Ho'er with spirits round mountain cave, / Ramble through meadows in thy gloam, / Discharged of all kwowledge's fumes, / Bathe to health me in thy dew.
- 1744, Friedrich von Hagedorn, Die Landlust[1], [2], verses 9–12:
- Both weak and strong forms are standard. For the sense “to weave”, the weak forms have been preferred, but at least the past participle gewoben is also common.
