Abstract

This case report describes the clinical diagnosis and post-mortem confirmation of herniation of the abomasum into the thoracic cavity of a 4-month-old Texel lamb through a diaphragmatic tear, extending from the oesophageal hiatus. Diaphragmatic herniation is extremely uncommon in sheep, and unlike the situation in the case described, previous reports have all been based on post-mortem findings alone. The findings suggest that the tear was acquired, predisposed by a congenital weakness or malformation surrounding the oesophageal hiatus. It is proposed that there may be a heritable susceptibility to diaphragmatic tearing the Texel breed.
