Abstract

The optimisation of a non-linear control problem by genetic algorithm (GA) is studied in this paper. It involves the performance of a control system for course changing manoeuvres of an oil tanker. Sliding mode (SM) control theory is used to define the structure of this controller and the GA is used to optimise key control parameters so that satisfactory performance is obtained.
