A secondary concern was that a course learning outcomes assessment was not in place. They hypothesized that faculty concentrating on course design around learning outcomes and teaching to the learning outcomes of each course would cause a significant increase in student attainment of learning outcome knowledge. A learning outcome assessment survey was distributed to 17 randomly selected undergraduate and graduate courses in two regions of the Extended Campus of Embry-Riddle. Thirteen courses were specifically designed and taught to the learning outcomes, and four were not. The results indicated that there was a significant increase in student learning outcome knowledge attainment when courses were designed around the learning outcomes and the learning outcomes were stressed in all c...

With the health care system changing to a managed model of care and with changes in reimbursement policies for substance abuse treatment, these short, problem-specific approaches can be valuable in the treatment of addictive disorders. They provide the opportunity for clinicians to increase positive outcomes by using these modalities independently as stand-alone interventions and, more commonly, as additions to other forms of substance abuse and mental health treatment. Furthermore, they can be used in diverse venues, including opportunistic settings (e.g., primary care, home health care) and specialized substance abuse treatment settings (inpatient and outpatient). Appropriate for a variety of substance abuse problems from at-risk use to dependence, brief interventions and brief therapies can help clients reduce or stop abuse, act as a first step in the treatment process to determine if clients can stop or reduce on their own, and/or act as a method to change specific behaviors before or during treatment. Currently, the psychotherapy of substance abuse utilizes a wide variety of treatment modalities based on diverse theoretical perspectives, including, cognitive-behavioral, strategic and interactional, humanistic and existential, psychodynamic, family systems and group therapy.

Quantitative data and open area comments were analyzed. A replication of a previous study for 2016-17 data indicated that customer perceptions of Ryanair improved since the implementation of a customer service program. Survey results indicated Ryanair and Southwest did not have statistically significant differences in overall ratings; a change from 2012-13 data where Southwest was rated significantly higher. Additionally, 2016-17 Ryanair customers indicated they would recommend the airline at a significantly higher rate than Southwest customers. A comparison within each airline’s data between the 2012-13 and 2016-17 collection periods indicated a significant perceived improvement of Ryanair’s customer service in the areas of seat comfort and whether they would recommend the airline to others. Surveys of both students and instructors attempted to identify specific problem areas. Using the information from these surveys, the researchers developed a series of videos to explain vital course concepts and deployed these into the course sections. The purpose of the videos is to provide consistency across the multiple modalities in which we offer our courses (including online, classroom and via videoconferencing) and to improve overall student understanding. This project seeks to determine how supplemental content focusing on material identified as “difficult,” by students and instructors, can impact student performance. Challenges include the deployment of the videos across various modalities and obtaining sufficient student feedback.

Researchers examined 20,677 Embry-Riddle end-of-course student grades from the 2012-2013 academic year. Significant relationships between failing grades and learning environment (modes) were noted in courses from the English, Economics and Mathematics disciplines. Online courses experienced more failures relative to other modes of instruction in Humanities, Mathematics and Economics courses. The traditional classroom-learning mode had fewer failures relative to other modes in English, Humanities and Mathematics courses. Grade distribution was significantly different among some of the learning modes in disciplines studied. Due to the continued technological advancem...

In this study, researchers examined 2,097 student grades from the 2015-2016 academic year to determine if such a relationship existed. Online student grade distributions were significantly different than In-Person classroom, synchronous video home or synchronous video classroom students. Online Students tended to earn more "A"s and fewer "B"s and "D"s. Synchronous video

Only one study explored Physics at the whole-class level rather than specific course components such as a single lab or a homework platform. In this work, we compared the failure rate, grade distribution, and withdrawal rates in an introductory undergraduate Physics course across several learning modes including traditional face-to-face instruction, synchronous video instruction, and online classes. Statistically significant differences were found for student failure rates, grade distribution, and withdrawal rates but yielded small effect sizes. Post-hoc pair-wise test was run to determine differences between learning modes. Online students had a significantly lower failure rate than students who took the class via synchronous video classroom. While statistically significant differences were found for grade distributions, the pair-wise comparison yielded no statistically significance differences between learning modes when using the more conservative Bonferroni correction in post-hoc testing. Finally, in this study, student withdrawal rates were lowest for students who took the class in person (in-person classroom and synchronous video classroom) than online. Students that persist in an online introductory Physics class are more likely to achieve an A than in other modes. However, the withdrawal rate is higher from online Physics courses. Further research is warranted to better understand the reasons for higher withdrawal rates in online courses. Finding the root cause to help eliminate differences in student performance across learning modes should remain a high priority for education researchers and the education community as a whole.

Yet significant barriers exist, including low awareness of opportunities, restrictive cultural norms, and resource constraints. The proliferation of online education potentially increases barriers, both real and perceived. This study compared participation rates and perceived barriers between undergraduate distance and traditional students. Survey results indicated no significant differences in self-reported participation or overall interest in research. Despite inherent structural limitations of online education, there were no significant differences in the respondents' perceptions of access to opportunities, physical resources, or human resources. Significant differences were seen regarding awareness of research opportunities. Although institution-specific moderating factors may influence results, this information is valuable for strategic planning aimed at increasing opportunities and awareness for undergraduates.
